Register Review

New island home ZZV is the second of four Islanders to be exported that
were previously operated by Surveillance Australia on behalf of Australian
Customs. It has found a new home in Taiwan. (Robert Wiseman)

This month’s New Allocations section includes two new types – a Swearingen SX-300 and a Whisper Motorglider – as well as three new Cirrus SR22s, two elderly Cessnas and an upgraded amphibious amateur built.

Lyndon Tretheway’s Swearingen SX-300, SXO, is the first of its type on the local register and will probably be the only one to be seen in Australian skies as only 80 kits were sold. The number of completed aircraft may be considerably less as only 48 sets of landing gear were made by subcontractor Airight in Wichita, Kansas, and only two aircraft are known to be active in the US. A further two complete aircraft and three incomplete kits are presently being advertised for sale.

The SX-300 was designed by Ed Swearingen of San Antonio, Texas, and is a two-seat, single engine, all-metal kit aircraft incorporating a low wing and retractable tricycle undercarriage.

The basic concept was to provide an ‘up market’ kit for the amateur builder, but in reality it proved too challenging for the average home builder. Additionally, the aircraft was never proven by the factory and as a result several minor glitches were not addressed before the kit was made available to the public.

The SX-300 kit was available between 1984 and 1989, then in 1994 the owner of Airight, Jim Ryan, obtained the tooling, remaining kit components and production rights to the aircraft with the intention of supporting existing builders and to continue the supply of new kits. A fixed gear model, the SX-200, was also planned but unfortunately Ryan died in 1996 before these plans could go ahead. The remaining tools and spare parts were then obtained by Bill Johns and are stored at his factory at Fort Worth, Texas, but future production in not planned.

SCRAPPED Ex RAAF HS.748s AMQ and AHL (both pictured) have now been
scrapped, having being ferried to Southend, England, during February 2005 for
storage and possible resale. (Keith Brunton)

Lyndon’s SX-300 has been under construction at Goolwa Airfield for a number of years, and with formal registration now completed it is hoped that its first flight will take place in the very near future.

Stanley Nightingale’s Whisper Motorglider, ZIP, is the second new type in Australian skies. Produced by Whisper Aircraft at Port Elizabeth, South Africa, the Motorglider is a two-seat, low wing, carbon fibre aircraft fitted with a fixed tailwheel undercarriage and a mid mounted tail section. The aircraft comes as a kit, but there are several professional builders in the US that specialise in building the Whisper for customers.

The aircraft was originally powered by a Linbach L200 engine, but Rotax and Jabiru powerplants will soon be available. The makers claim the Whisper will cruise at 95kt at 75 per cent power with a range of 1200km.

Three Cirrus SR22s have been added to the register this month – two brand new G3 Models plus an older G2. The Cirrus has been the best selling aircraft in its class for the last five years and over 5500 have been built since the first SR20 was released during 1998. There are presently over 100 on the VH register with at least five more known to be in the country as yet unregistered, and a further five are flying in New Zealand.

Michael Poole’s Cessna 170A SLY owes it heritage to Cessna’s first postwar civil aircraft – the two seat Cessna 120 and 140 models produced between 1946 and 1949. Such was the success of these two aircraft that Cessna developed a four-seat version, the 170, which first flew during 1948. The 170A was introduced in 1950 and boasted an all-metal wing, dorsal fin fairing and single wing struts as opposed to the original 170 which had a fabric covered wing and V shaped wing bracing struts. Over 1500 170As were built between 1950 and 1953 before the model was replaced with the 170B with larger slotted flaps and an upgraded Continental engine. SLY becomes the ninth Cessna 170A currently flying in Australia.

While Cessna was developing the 120, 140 and 170 models it was also working on a larger, heavier five-seater owing much to the design of the prewar C-145 and C-165 Airmasters. The 190 was in production, along with the 195, between 1947 and 1953 with over 1000 of the type produced.

The 190 was powered by a 240hp (180kW) Continental radial engine while the 195 used a 300hp (225kW) Jacobs.

The 195A, powered by a 245hp (183kW) Jacobs, was introduced in 1953, while one year later the 195B appeared fitted with a 275hp (205kW) Jacobs radial. Only 100 examples of this model were produced during 1954 before Cessna began concentrating on the more refined 180 Skywagon, 172 Skyhawk and 182 Skylane. The result was that the Cessna 195B became a sought after collectors’ aircraft. Virginia Dalton’s 195B is the only one of its type presently flying in Australia and was one of the last 195s built.

David Geers’s Progressive Aerodyne SeaRey XWW is the recently released LSX model which incorporates a new hull and revamped interior. The new shaped hull is designed to make it easier to takeoff from land and water and its carbon/ graphite construction also saves around 27kg of weight.

There are currently 23 original SeaReys on the CASA register with one with the RA-Aus and three flying in New Zealand.

Twenty-one aircraft are shown in the Deletions section this issue with almost half of these being exported.

The two Air Tractors, FFB and FFU, have returned to Canada after spending five months with Field Air at Ballarat on bush firefighting duties in Victoria.

The two aircraft, specially fitted out for aerial firefighting were leased from Conair at Abbotsford, British Columbia, which operates a massive fleet of aircraft including Air Tractors, Piper Aerostars, Rockwell Turbo Commanders and Cessna Caravans as well as larger Convair 580s, Canadair CL-215s and Douglas DC-6s.

Diamond Twin Star AHX is now with the CAE Global Academy at Birsi Airport in Gondia, India, after being ferried by Australian Air Ferry from the Diamond factory at London in Ontario, Canada, to India. The Australian markings were only used for the Diamond’s ferry flight from London to Newfoundland then through Europe via Madrid, on to Crete, Luxor and Oman to Mumbai. The CAE Global Academy has a fleet of 22 Diamond DA40s and DA42s and can accommodate up to 200 students at its modern training facility at Gondia.

ZZV is the second of four Islanders to be exported that were previously operated by Surveillance Australia on behalf of Australian Customs. A third aircraft, ZZT, is being refurbished at Caboolture, Queensland, by Doug Alchemy Aviation before going to Malaysia as 9M-LYG.

Two aircraft have been deleted due to damage, Cessna 150G SLY and Cessna 172S XSP – coincidentally both by high winds. Michael Poole’s Cessna 150 has been replaced by a Cessna 170 and Ayers Rock Scenic Flights’s Cessna 172S has been replaced by an earlier model Skyhawk SP, with both aircraft taking up the markings of their predecessors.

The latest XSP is the fourth allocation of these markings all being previously worn by Cessna 172S Skyhawk SPs.

Alligator Airways has ordered five brand new Gippsland Airvans and as a result WOQ is the first of five older modelsto change markings before being traded in to Gippsland.

The new aircraft will be 320 TC models and will take up the markings of the older machines – WOQ, WOG, WOP, WOS and WOV (refer Traffic p85 this issue for more details).

Of the seven aircraft listed as being revoked, five of these are Hughes 500C helicopters operated by Barry Jones of Sutherland, NSW.

A little research into aircraft recently exported has revealed some subsequent markings from countries that are normally hard to get information from. Eurocopter EC120 ALP, which was noted in the July 2009 issue as going to Cambodia, is now known to be marked as XU‑168 with NH Holdings but operated by Helistar at Phnom Penh. Also with Helistar is Robinson R44 HSZ which is now XU‑268.

In China, Robinson R22 HQR is flying as B-7059 with Guangzhou Sui Helicopter General Aviation. Twin Otter TZR which went to Suriname earlier this year is now known to be operating with Blue Wing Airlines as PZ-TSH. Also with Blue Wing at Zore en Hoop is Twin Otter OTA which is being used as a spares source for Blue Wing’s other two Twin Otters. Bell 212s URS and VGK, which were shown in the March issue, are now N373EC and N369EC respectively and, although US registered, are operating in Puerto Rico. Also US registered but being flown offshore is Sikorsky S-76C FLH, which is marked as N4511G and is based in Singapore.

Sportline LAK-12 glider GDE is now with the Aeroklub Frydlant nad Ostravici in the Czech Republic as OK-5305, and Glaser-Dirks DG500 motorised glider GKX is in Germany flying as D-KLRR.

In Africa, Dornier 228 UJD is now 5Y-BWN and is based at Wilson, Kenya, while in the US Yak-52 BYJ is owned by Bruce Kirchenheiter in Park City, Utah, and is flying as N50BK. In Europe the two Agusta Koalas that went to Spain during 2008, RPW and RPS, are now known to have become EC-KQD and EC-KQE respectively. Hughes 500D HWD which was shown in last issue’s deletions as simply ‘exported’ is now known to have gone to Israel, although its subsequent markings are not know yet.

News from Keith Burton at Southend, England, has recently been received about the three RAAF Hawker Siddeley 748s that were ferried to Southend during February 2005 for storage and possible resale. The engines were removed and sent to Canada during May last year and AYS was broken up at the same time. The two remaining aircraft, AMQ and AHL, have now been scrapped, and with two others being broken up at Bankstown during April 2003 the only RAAF 748 still flying is A10- 602 which was last noted with Guinee Air Cargo as 3X-GEE.

Finally, Bristow Helicopters Aerospatiale SA330 Puma WOB, which went to Pacific Helicopters in PNG as P2‑PHZ, is now with EP Aviation at McLean, Virginia. EP Aviation is rumoured to have contracts with the CIA and US special forces and the Puma was noted passing through Prestwick, Scotland, during November 2008 in the hold of an Antonov An-124 heading for Afghanistan.
