Unnecessary turbulence

Building-generated turbulence that compromises aircraft handling is becoming a serious topic amongst regional and general aviation operators. It is the subject of a formal ATSB investigation and raises many operational and policy issues.

On at least one major airport, one metro secondary airport and one GAAP airport new buildings are causing serious handling problems for pilots when the wind blows from particular quarters at anything over ten knots. These buildings have been constructed since private ownership came into force and with the apparent blessing of government. Current policy is that if a building project is over $20m it requires ministerial approval. If it is under $20m it comes under an outsourced body called the Airport Building Controller that makes a recommendation regarding construction to government.
