Register Review

A large batch of imports and locally built aircraft make up the New Allocations this month with the usual cross section of helicopters, bizjets, airliners, amateur built and hot air balloons.

Kevin Haydon’s Vans RV-8 KVI is a US import built by Rod Bower from Visalia, California, during 2007. It attended the 2008 EAA fly-in at Oshkosh in a striking semi military paint scheme of dark green, grey and yellow. Coded B-FC and sporting a USAF star and bar on the fuselage it also carried the fictitious military serial 780769 on the tail.

Southern Star Aviation Group’s Twin Comanche EXA is the first of its type to be imported since 2004. The Twin Comanche has been quite popular in Australia with the first two arriving during December 1963, the first year of production, and more than 60 are still flying in this country. EXA is one of the last PA-30s to be built being number 1984 of the 2000 constructed at Piper’s Lock Haven facility in Pennsylvania.

All PA-30 Twin Comanches were fitted with twin 160hp (119kW) Lycoming engines, although Piper did experiment with 200hp (149kW) Lycomings but this derivative did not enter production. Instead, two US companies, Robertson and Miller, converted Piper built 160hp Twin Comanches to 200hp hot rods with one Miller example registered locally.

During 1970 the PA-30 Twin Comanche was replaced by the PA-39 Twin Comanche which retained the 160hp engines but was fitted with contra-rotating propellers, and this in turn was replaced by the PA-34 Seneca in 1972 after only 155 PA-39s were built.

Cessna P210R Centurion TYV is the first of its type on the Australian register and is quite a rare aircraft as only 40 of this model were built during 1986. Cessna introduced the turbocharged and pressurised Centurion P210N in 1978 and built 834 before the P210R replaced it in 1986. The 310hp (231kW) Continental was upgraded to the 325hp (242kW) GTSIO-520-CE engine allowing a higher TOGW, the wing span was increased and it featured cambered wingtips.

Unfortunately 1987 was the year of the product liability crisis and Cessna ceased production of all models except the 208 Caravan and Citation series. It was to be another 10 years before new 172s, 182s and 206s were seen again, while production of the 210 Centurion was never restarted.

AJB is the third Lycoming engined Diamond DA42 Twin Star to come to Australia since Hawker Pacific became the local agents for the type last year.

The futuristic looking Twin Star is expected to be a big seller in 2010 with Hawker Pacific also involved with upgrading older examples from Thielert diesel power to the more reliable Lycoming engines.

Two more Republic of Singapore Air Force SIAI Marchetti S211s have joined the register, BVK and CBL, these being the two ex Haitian Air Force machines as described in the last issue of AA. All 20 S211s are now at Jandakot in various stages of airworthiness, but all are believed to require very little work to make them airworthy again.

Three more Kavanagh hot air balloons have been added to the register this month, including the first ‘special shape’ to be constructed by the company.

Kavanagh has been very slow in tapping into the special shape marketplace, preferring up to now to concentrate on conventional shaped balloons, but offering a wide variety of sizes. In contrast, European and particularly British based balloon makers have been building special shaped balloons for a number of years using unusual shapes to advertise products and bring colour and humour to balloon meets. LUB first flew on December 15 and is in the shape of a Libra box 19m high with a 16m x 9m cross section.

It has a 90,000 cu ft displacement envelope and is fully digitally printed with the words Libra and The Lucky Box.

Two aircraft are Returning to the Register, Kawasaki BK117 RLI and Learjet 45 VVI. The BK was built during 1989 and was delivered new to Nihon Helicopters in Tokyo as JA9940. Garden City Helicopters in Christchurch, New Zealand, purchased it during May 1997 and registered it ZK-HNE before selling it to Rotor-Lift of Cambridge, Tasmania, in August 1998 where it became RLI for the first time.

While with Rotor-Lift it was converted from an A-4 model to a B-2 by replacing the twin Lycoming LTS 101-650B-1 engines with LTS 101-750B-1 powerplants, thereby providing increased performance and an extra 140kg payload.

It returned to New Zealandwith Heli-Works Queenstown Helicopters during March 2009 flying as ZK-IMN, but is now back in Tasmania with Skyplan Australia and takes up its previous markings of RLI.

Learjet 45 VVI is one of only seven of the type on the local register with four operated by the Singapore Flying College and based at Maroochydore, Queensland, one with Careflight (Qld) and one with Pacific Flight Services at Bankstown.

VVI was built in late 2004 and delivered to Addenbrooke Aviation in Sydney during March 2005. Ownership changed to AGG Learjet during December 2006 and less than a year later it was exported to the US as N45AU, but still registered to AGG Learjet. Now back as VVI it has joined the Execujet Australia fleet at Sydney alongside two Learjet 60s, a Gulfstream IV and a Bombardier Global 5000.

Of the 19 Deletions listed almost half have been exported and to a wide range of countries.

Agusta Bell 212 VGK, previously operated by the Royal Oman Air Force, is now in Puerto Rico, Bell 212 URS has been exported to an unknown country after only 10 days on the local register (see New Allocations), and General Aviation Maintenance Dornier 228 YJD has gone to the Philippines.

Although the new markings for the Dornier are not yet known, an all-white 228 was noted at Manila during December marked as RP-C2287.

The aircraft was reported as a replacement for a damaged 228 and the new aircraft is most likely to be the ex YJD.

Gippsland Airvan BVK in now with Airvanafrica in South Africa where it joins five other Airvans on the local register, and Cessna R182 Skylane CHK has gone to the US. One of only two Air Tractor AT-504s on the local register, INO is now working in Indonesia and Jetstar Airbus A320 JQE has been transferred to Jetstar Asia Airways in Singapore where it now flies as 9V-JSG. Closer to home, P-750 NZJ has returned to its homeland where it has become ZK-SDT and replaces Cresco ZK-SDT on parachute duties at Taupo, New Zealand.

The Cresco was painted in a bright pink colour scheme and the replacement 750XL has been repainted in the same very bright pink.

New ultralight aircraft imports, home built projects and migration from the CASA register has meant that Recreational Aviation Australia (RA-Aus) membership has increased dramatically over the last few years with aircraft on the RA-Aus register now over 3000 and membership almost 10,000. The RA-Aus markings for two aircraft shown in the January/February deletions listing are now known, with Wittman Tailwind OWS flying as 19‑7343 and ICP Savannah VMT becoming 19-7318.

Also shown in the January/ February deletions was Beech 1900D NIA which was noted as returning to South Africa.

It is now known to be back with Awesome Flight Logistics and flying as ZS-SNO. Also in South Africa is Schweizer 300C JDB whose new markings have not previously been reported in this column. The helicopter is with Karoo Helicopters and flies as ZK-RJX.

Embraer Bandeirante LNB, which had seen service with Hazelton Airlines (as WPE), Lincoln Airlines, and Airnorth Regional before being exported to Guatemala last year is now flying with Transportes Aereos Guatemaltecos and marked as TG-TAG.

Going a lot further back in time, Royal Australian Navy DH115 Sea Vampire N6-766 was one of seven British built Vampires to come to Australia before local production began at Bankstown. When the type was retired from military service N6-766 languished at Bankstown for a number of years and was allocated civil markings of RAN, but this was not taken up and the aircraft eventually went back to the UK where it was rebuilt and became G-SPDR. Nick Rose of Bournemouth, Dorset, has recently obtained the 1954 vintage jet warbird and has reregistered it G-VYPO.
