Naval helicopter decision looms

The battle to replace the Royal Australian Navy’s fleet of 16 S-70B-2 Seahawks and the still vacant anti-surface capability left by the cancellation of the Seasprite is ramping up.

The hot topic at late January’s Pacific 2010 maritime exposition in Sydney was whether federal cabinet would go with Defence’s reported recommendation and order the Sikorsky/Lockheed Martin MH-60R ‘Romeo’ under a sole source contract, or whether, against the backdrop of a stunning eleventh hour marketing effort by Australian Aerospace for its NH90 NFH, it opts to conduct a full competition between the two bids.
