Caribous For Point Cook And Awm
Two Caribou’s have been allocated to museums, A4-152 to the RAAF Museum at Point Cook and A4-140 to the Australian War Memorial.
Caribou A4-140 made its last flight, from RAAF at Richmond to Point Cook on Thursday November 26. The machine touched down at exactly 1 pm to the sounds of the RAAF band striking up the song ‘Those Magnificent Men and their Flying Machines’. As it taxied up to the shut down point it received the traditional paid-off shower of water from two fire tankers. The aircraft was later presented to the museum Director, Dave Gardner, by its Captain, No 38 Squadron Executive Officer, Squadron Leader Victoria Victoria Rookyard. Museum Director Dave Gardner commented that the final flight of the Caribou was also the end of the piston era of RAAF aircraft.
A4-152 has flown some 20,360 hours since it was handed over to the RAAF in mid 1964. Over the years the aircraft has served in many deployments including Vietnam.
