RAAF JSF buy approved – but only for one squadron

Defence Minister Senator John Faulkner announced that Australia has committed to buy a first batch of 14 Lockheed Martin F-35A Joint Strike Fighters (JSFs) and associated training and support infrastructure for the RAAF at an estimated cost of $3.2 billion, after cabinet’s National Security Committee granted second pass approval for the purchase on November 24.
Despite being foreshadowed in the 2009 Defence White paper, many observers had anticipated the decision to acquire the JSF may be delayed by at least six months to mid 2010 due to forward funding uncertainties in the Defence budget at home and in the JSF development program in the US.
