Register Review
This month’s New Allocations include two new types to Australian skies, the SIAI Marchetti S-211 and Soko Galeb – both jet warbirds.
SIAI Marchetti began development work on a new military jet trainer during 1976, hoping to receive orders from smaller countries who already operated their piston engine SF260 trainer. The initial concept called for a two-seat, single engine primary jet trainer with retractable tricycle undercarriage, with the final specification using a Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D turbofan and incorporating a mid-wing layout. Four underwing hardpoints were also included so the aircraft could be marketed as a multirole close support fighter/trainer.
The aircraft was designated S-211 and two prototypes were built, whereupon the Republic of Singapore Air Force ordered 10 examples in 1983. Further orders were received from the Philippine Air Force with 25 factory built machines and 15 locally assembled by Philippine Aerospace Development Corporation, the Haitian air force for four aircraft and the RSAF increased its order to 32 with 24 of these being assembled by Singapore Aircraft Industries.
Unfortunately the S-211 was not the sales success that was hoped for and only the three air forces noted above ordered the type and only around 70 aircraft were built. The Philippine Air Force obtained one additional, partially complete, airframe from SIAI Machetti for spare parts. Of the four Haitian air force machines, two went to the RSAF as attrition replacements while the other two are now flying in the US in private hands.
During 1996 the RSAF’s 130 Sqn moved its Flight Training School to Pearce in Western Australia along with its 26 remaining S-211s, and more recently these aircraft have been replaced with Pilatus PC-21 trainers. Four of the Pearce based S-211s have been written off and two have been returned to Singapore for display purposes. The remaining 20 aircraft were obtained by IAP Group Australia earlier this year and were recently moved from Pearce to Jandakot for storage pending sale. Eighteen aircraft travelled by road with the two flying examples, BQY and BRQ, believed to have made the journey by air. While many of the S-211s are expected to be sold overseas, it is hoped that at least some will be domiciled in Australia and will appear at future air shows around the country.
The Soko Galeb (Seagull) was the first indigenous jet to be mass produced in Yugoslavia. It was a two-seat, single engine, low wing trainer, reconnaissance and light ground attack aircraft which first flew during July 1961. Yugoslavia’s Aeronautical Technical Institute designed the aircraft during 1957 and it featured a straight wing with tip tanks, Folland lightweight ejector seats and a licence built Rolls-Royce Viper turbojet engine. The main landing gear retracted into the wing which therefore needed to be stronger and heavier, which helped with slow speed stalling characteristics but precluded supersonic flight.
Around 250 Galebs were built between 1965 and 1981 with the majority used by the Yugoslav air force and some exported to Libya, Serbia, Zaire and Zambia. The Croatian air force is reported to have operated a single Galeb which it captured from Serbia.
Of the 250 Galebs built, an unknown number are still flying in Yugoslavia on the local civil register and about 10 are known to have been obtained by US warbird enthusiasts with only five of these thought to be still airworthy. Jeff Knott has obtained two Galebs, YUE and YUF, one from the US and one from Yugoslavia, with YUF moving from the US to New Zealand during 2004 and subsequently displayed at the 2005 Omaka Airshow before coming to Australia last year.

Eagle Helicycle CYC is only the fourth of this type to come to Australia, two of which are still flying with one only recently imported and not yet on the register. Two have been AVIATIONimported into New Zealand with one of these still flying.
The Helicycle is a single-seat, single engine helicopter produced in Nampa, Idaho, and available as a kit for amateur construction. It was designed by BJ Schramm, who later founded Rotorway International, and interestingly the Helicycle’s powerplant, the 160shp (119kW) Solar T-62 turbine engine, is also fitted to the latest Rotorway project, the Rotorway Jetexec. The engine is widely used as an auxiliary power unit in military Sea Knight and Chinook helicopters. The Helicycle kit is delivered in six packs – airframe and skids, engine and transmission, main rotor subassembly, tail rotor subassembly, control/linkages and cockpit interior, and fuel and electrical subsystems.
Around 180 kits have been delivered to customers, and a unique feature is that Eagle retains some critical components of the aircraft which are only supplied when a factory designated technician and test pilot has checked out the build quality and ensures that the customer has at least a solo endorsement on the Robinson R22 because the feel of the controls of the Helicyle is modelled on the R22. This requirement has resulted in a very low accident rate for the type.
Three aircraft are listed in the Aircraft Returning to Register section this issue, Bell 212 NSY, Sikorksy S-76 XHL and Beech Bonanza XPJ. The Bell 212 is on its fifth stint in Australia with visits to Canada, South Africa, India, UK, Trinidad and USA in between. The helicopter first came to this country during October 1981 with Bristow Helicopters and had already been used in Europe, America and Africa before then. The ill-fated National Safety Council of Australia operated it between February 1987 and April 1989 and Lloyd Helicopters between April 1989 and September 2007. Kestrel Aviation College obtained it next and after sojourns in India and South Africa it is back in Australia after four months in Canada.
Sikorsky S-76 XHL has returned to Australia after five years in Turkmenistan flying as EZ-S703. Turkmenistan, part of the Soviet Union prior to 1991, is bordered by Afghanistan, Iran, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan and is rich in natural gas and oil. Although situated in a very troubled part of the world the country’s economy is booming and the Sikorsky was one of a number of helicopters used in the local energy industry.
Bonanza XPJ was damaged at West Sale during January 2008 but has since been repaired and is back on the register with Ian Farmer at Kew, Victoria.
The Deletions section this month shows 35 aircraft, of which the majority have been exported. New Zealand is the favourite destination with elderly Cessna 172D BDL going to The Property Shop at Wellington where it flies as ZK‑BDL. Brand new Diamond Twin Stars BVW and BXQ are now operating with the Massey University School of Aviation at Palmerston North as ZK-MTS and ZK-MTR respectively.
Massey University School of Aviation was established in 1990 and provides pilot training and academic studies to Bachelor of Aviation Degree, Masters and Graduate Diploma level. It joined forces with the Singapore Aviation Academy at Changi during 1998 to provide Asian students with the same opportunities, and the two new Twin Stars join 12 single engine Diamond Stars, nine Piper Warriors, three Piper Senecas and a single Piper Seminole in the Palmerston North based fleet.
Beech Super King Air KFN was imported during August 1989 for the RFDS Western Operations to serve the Kimberley area, with the markings KFN meaning Kimberley Flying Nurse. More recently it was operated by Sky Trek of Cambridge, Tasmania, before being sold to Garden City Helicopters in Christchurch where it flies as ZK-FDR.
VZF and VZG are the first two brand new Boeing 737‑800s for Jetconnect in Auckland which have now become ZK‑ZQA and ZK‑ZQB respectively. Jetconnect has previously operated earlier 737‑300s and -400s transferred from the Qantas fleet.
Yakovlev Yak-50 BYJ, Cameron special shapes balloon (Formula One Racing Car) FGP and Saab 340 UYC are all now in the US with the Saab, previously operated by MacAir Airlines, now registered N470LH with Aerocentury Corporation at Burlingame, California. Closer to home, Gippsland Airvan BQY has been sold to Mission Aviation Fellowship at Mount Hagen, PNG, as P2-MFL, Cessna 172P KKX is now in Indonesia, Boeing 727 VLI is in Malaysia and Kavanagh balloon YMS has gone to Japan where hot air ballooning is a fast growing sport.
Recent surveys of the Indonesian and Philippine civil aircraft registers have revealed some previously unknown details of Australian aircraft exported to these countries during the last 12 months. Cirruses EDQ and EDP which were shown in the October 2008 deletions are now known to have become PK-ECA and PK‑ECB respectively, while Cessna 172s PXX and NVC are now PK-ROA and PK-ROC. Ayers S2R PMD is now RP‑R3298 with Airtrac Agricultural at Davao City, Rockwell S-2R MPM is registered RP-R3029, and BAe 146 NJE is now flying with Lionair at Manila as RP-C5255.
In Malaysia two of the five Piper Senecas previously operated by the China Southern WA Flying School and since sold to Gulf Golden Square at Bintulu, VMI and VMJ, are now 9M-GLJ and 9M-GAR respectively. General Flying Services Cessna 172 NUE is now in India where it flies as VT-GOD with Park Aeronautics at Tirupur, while in Japan Surveillance Australia BN-2 Islander ZZW has been registered JA127D to Sanei Shoji at Ami.
Further afield, Twin Otter JEA, which was shown in the March 2008 deletions, has only recently become PZ-TSD with Blue Wing Airlines at Zorg-en-Hoop, Suriname, and Piper Brave BOV in now known to have become N3995D. The two Diamond DA40s, ABT and AEA, that were operated by the Royal Queensland Aero Club at Archerfield from 2005 but were returned to Diamond Aircraft in London, Canada, earlier this year have now been registered C-GFPF and C-FTMT respectively.
