Register Review

A couple of new types and a couple of interesting not-sonew types are embedded in the New Allocations this issue.

Peter Smythe’s Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawk, AJY, is the only warbird shown this month and joins four other Kittyhawks and Warhawks on the local register. The previous RAAF identity of AJY is quoted as A29-99, but as with most warbirds the actual provenance is a little hazy. The original A29-99 force-landed at Mildura during May 1945 and was reduced to components to help keep other aircraft flying. Exactly how much of the original aircraft has been used in the rebuild of AJY is a matter for debate, but the fact is it will be good to see another classic type in Australian skies.

Hawker Pacific has imported two Diamond DA42 Twin Stars from Diamond’s Canadian production line, BVW and BXQ. The Twin Star has earned a reputation as a very capable aircraft, but unfortunately has been affected by issues with its original Thielert diesel engine that has led to Flight Training Australia, the largest operator of the type in this country, grounding its fleet of seven aircraft until their engines can be replaced by Lycoming units.

The original DA42 was powered by two Thielert Centurion 1. 7 litre diesel engines based on the production Mercedes TDI automotive powerplant, designed to use Jet-A1. Unfortunately Thielert filed for insolvency during April 2008 which left Diamond in the unenviable position of not being able to ensure serviceability of the existing DA42 fleet. During May 2008 Thielert announced bankruptcy and that it could no longer honour warranties for engines installed in Diamond aircraft. Two months later Diamond had to suspend production of DA42s with as many as 40 airframes at its London, Ontario, plant awaiting engines.

During early 2009 Diamond’s own Austro diesel engine achieved EASA certification and the Lycoming IO-360 was offered as an option as DA42 production recommenced. The two Hawker Pacific aircraft are the first in the region with 10-360s, and were due to be redelivered to New Zealand’s Massey University by late October.

Tony Wilson’s Raj Hamsa X’Air, VTW, is the first of its type on the CASA register,although there are more than 60 X’Airs on the RA-Aus register.

Raj Hamsa was founded in India during 1980 by Joel Koechlin who began by designing and building hang gliders for the fledgling Indian market.

Financial and moral support was supplied by JRD Tata, a local businessman and a pioneer of early Indian aviation and founder of Air India. During 1983 single-seat powered hang gliders were introduced and the following year two-seat models were made available to meet the growing need for training and cross country flights.

In 1985 operations began at Kalhatty, near Ooty, where the Nilgiris Hang Gliding Centre was established and training courses and competitions were conducted.

To address the acute shortage of light aircraft in India during the early 1990s Raj Hamsa developed a three-axis microlight called the X’Air.

This was a two-seat, side-byside, high wing aircraft with a tricycle undercarriage and a Rotax 582 engine mounted on the centre of the wing, above and in front of the cockpit.

Construction was of aluminium alloy tube covered with fabric, and dual controls were fitted so the aircraft could be used as a trainer. Later versions had flaps and over 1300 have been produced, the majority having been exported.

The next logical step was a more conventional looking aircraft and as a result the Hanuman was developed. Using the same construction techniques and materials as previous models, the Hanuman’s engine has been moved into the nose of the aircraft and enclosed in a composite cowling. The Australian 80hp (60kW) Jabiru 2200 four cylinder, four stroke engine is the standard powerplant, although the Rotax 582 and 912 are available as options.

The cockpit is fully enclosed and the 80 litre fuel tank allows for around eight hours’ flying.

Tony’s X’Air Hanuman is finished in the attractive blue and yellow factory colours and is waiting for the delivery of its Jabiru engine from Bundaberg.

All being well, the aircraft should take to the air before Christmas and be a regular visitor to airshows and fly-ins in the Sydney area next year.

Piper Malibu FAL had been imported from Japan in a damaged condition and when it takes to the air after repairs it will be the 12th of its type flying in Australia. The Malibu was landing at Yamaguchi airport, Japan, when the pilot inadvertently moved the undercarriage select lever to the ‘up’ position. The aircraft slid off the runway and stopped on the grass beside the strip. Thankfully there was no fire and the only occupant was not injured – only embarrassed. The aircraft received only minor damage and was recently noted at Jandakot receiving attention before its first flight in Australia.

UXO seems to be just another Piper Pawnee joining the local register, but on closer inspection it proves to be a rare Argentinian built machine.

Piper was the first major manufacturer to build a dedicated agricultural aircraft when the Pawnee was introduced in May 1959. Up to then sprayers had been mainly converted military types that were not ideal for the task and relatively expensive to operate, although cheap to buy initially. Piper entered the agricultural aircraft market a good six years before its close rival Cessna and went on to produce 5167 Pawnees before production ceased in 1981.

Demand for a simple and cheap to operate agricultural aircraft continued in South America through the 1980s and ’90s and as a result Piper sold the type certificate for the Pawnee to Lavia SA in Argentina during April 1998. Although information about production numbers is difficult to obtain from Lavia it seems that UXO is the 22nd 2008 build Pawnee, or Puelche as it is locally known.

Air Tractor ODM and Rotorway Exec RXC are the only two Aircraft Returning to the Register this month, with the Air Tractor repaired after an accident at Boggabilla, NSW, during December last year. The Rotorway was back on the register five days after it was revoked by CASA on August 6.

Of the 23 aircraft listed in the Deletions section this issue, seven have been exported with the majority of these going to the US. Bell JetRanger DIB is now with Fred Webber of Rexford, Montana, flying as N78WF, TBM 850 MRJ is based at Houston, Texas, with Aircraft Guaranty Corporation and marked as N850VT, and Cessna 650 Citation VRC has been traded in to Cessna at Wichita, Kansas, and is now registered N789VP.

Zenair ZZY became N69999 but has since chanced to N701CH, and Hughes 300C OCD has become N774WN with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society of Friday Bay, Washington State. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society also has a base in Melbourne from where it conducts its Southern Hemisphere operations, primarily harassing Japanese whaling boats in the Great Southern Ocean. Paul Watson skippers the society’s vessel MV Steve Irwin, on which the Hughes is believed to be located.

Pionair Convair PDV has been sold to Conair Aviation of Abbotsford, Canada, where it is active as C-GYXC.

Recent news from Syria indicates that former East West/Ansett BAe 146 EWM has been impounded by the government at Damascus Airport. The 146 is currently owned by Orionair who had leased the aircraft to startup operator Syrian Pearl and flown it to Damascus during May. It seems that the Bureau of Industry and Security of the US Department of Commerce deemed the lease to be a violation of the trade embargo imposed on Syria and issued a Temporary Denial Order.

Companies associated with the lease of EWM were forced to withdraw their support for the Orionair deal, and with Syria refusing to allow the aircraft to leave the country EWM is stranded at Damascus.
