Register Review

For the second month in succession there are no new types or subtypes in the New Allocations section – although there are some interesting aircraft listed.

Islander YIE has arrived from Japan and will spend a while in Australia before eventually making its way to Kiribati. The Islander came from the Romanian production line which was a result of an offset agreement between the British and Romanian governments when British Aircraft Corporation was trying to sell BAC One-Elevens to Tarom, the Romanian state airline, during the late 1960s. The deal was that Tarom would buy One- Elevens and Britten-Norman would licence Intreprinderea de Reparat Material Aeronautic (IRMA) at Bucharest to build Islanders. The completed Islanders would then be flown “green” to Bembridge on the Isle of Wight in England for completion and delivery.

Over 500 aircraft were eventually built at Bucharest but during 1982 sales were slow and as a result, although YIE made its maiden flight during October that year, it was not delivered to Bembridge until April 1984.

Eight months later it crossed the Atlantic on delivery to Jonas Aircraft in New York who were the US agents for the type at the time and who registered it N667J. Jonas then sold the aircraft to Nihon Business Jet of Iyejima, Japan, and it became JA5281 in July 1986.

Australian Air Ferry was contracted to deliver the Islander from Japan to Australia with the ferry taking four days.

The routing was Okayama, Kagoshima and Guam the first day, a rest day at Guam, then to Madang, PNG, the following day, Madang to Cairns and then on to Archerfield the fourth day. Ian Aviation at Archerfield will be refurbishing and repainting the Islander before onward delivery to Kiribati which may take several months.

Australian Air Ferry is now an internationally recognised company that specialises in door-to-door delivery of aircraft worldwide, including organising all documentation, permits, airspace transit and the mountain of paperwork involved with ferrying aircraft through different countries.

Hardy Aviation has added a fourth Cessna 441 Conquest to its growing fleet which numbers 24 at present. The latest Conquest comes from Pakistan where it was previously operated by the Provincial Government of Punjab VIP Flight.

(With the sale of the Conquest the VIP Flight has now been reduced to a Beech 400A Beechjet and a Bell 412SP helicopter based at Lahore. ) Hardy Aviation commenced operations in October 1991 with a Cessna 404 Titan and a Cessna 210 Centurion, with a Cessna 402 being added the following year. Since then Swearingen Metros, Cessna 441s and Beech Barons have also joined the fleet. The company operates charter flights for the Northern Territory and federal governments as well as the mining, oil and gas industries, and flies to Port Keats, Daly River, Peppimenarti and Palumpa on behalf of the Murin Association. Hardy also operates regular flights to the Tiwi Islands, Croker Island and Goulburn Island.

Flight Training Adelaide has doubled its helicopter training fleet with the addition of Schweizer 300CBs FTD and FTY. The company already operates two 300CBs along with an extensive fleet of fixed wing aircraft – mainly Grob T‑Birds, Diamond Twin Stars and Socata Tobagos.

Hawker Pacific has recently become the Australia and New Zealand agents for the Diamond range of light aircraft and has imported a DA20, DIU, and a DA40, DIV, for onward sale.

Diamond Aircraft Industries owes its heritage to both Hoffman and HOAC, which produced gliders and later powered gliders in Austria. During 1993 a Canadian production line was established in London, Ontario, to build the DA20 Katana. The DA40 made its maiden flight inNovember 1997 and deliveries began during 2000. The fourseat DA40 had the same design features, fully composite construction, low wing, tee-tail and fixed tricycle undercarriage. The DA42 was released in 2002 and was basically a DA40 with two wing mounted engines replacing the single nose mounted unit of the DA20. Two new types are being developed by Diamond – the five-seat pressurised single engine turbo DA50 and the five-seat D-Jet light jet powered by a single turbofan mounted within the rear fuselage. Deliveries of both new types are planned for 2010. There are presently three DA20s, 12 DA40s and 12 DA42s flying in Australia, with seven DA20s and eight DA42s in New Zealand.

In the Deletions section Eurocopter Colibri ALP has been exported with its final destination unknown at this time, although the aircraft registration holder is listed as NH Holdings with a Cambodian address, which may give a clue as to where it has gone. The only other exports listed are Cessna 172P Skyhawk WIX which has joined a couple of other Cessna 172s recently sold to Indonesia, and Cessna 180 MDK which is now in New Zealand.

The Cessna 180 is a popular aircraft in New Zealand with 62 currently registered there. Its rugged airframe and powerful engine make it ideal for operating from unpaved strips in mountainous areas and its versatility is well proven with the type seen on floats, skis and wheels in New Zealand.

MDK is a 180D model which was built during 1961, and only 151 examples left the production line before the 180E was introduced in 1962. Of these, 11 came to Australia with only four still flying in this country.

EYT is a 1974 model Cessna 150L which was delivered new to Australia during June of that year. It was damaged at Archerfield during July 1976 but was back on the register by January 1979 after repairs. The markings were revoked by CASA during July 2006 but restored to the register in August 2008. It has now been transferred to the RA-Aus register where it flies as 24-7133.

The usual batch of reregistrations appear in the listing including RFDS Beech Super King Air MVS which has been changed to AMQ and becomes the sixth aircraft to carry these markings. The first AMQ was allocated to a DH. 82 Tiger Moth between 1946 and 1953, the second was a Dornier Do27 registered during 1961 but which crashed in PNG the following year. Then came the NSW Ambulance Service’s Beech Queen Air which carried the markings for a remarkable 33 years between 1971 and 2004. Next there were two ex RAAF HS. 748s, the first lasting only three months before being scrapped at Bankstown and the second only used for its ferry flight to the UK where it is presently being reduced to spare parts. With the marking now on the King Air it is interesting to reflect that Australia is one of the few countries around the world that re-uses registrations.

David Shorter has sold his Rolladen-Schneider LS 8 glider ZDS and acquired a Schempp- Hirth Discus NSO, and in order to keep his personalised markings on his new mount he has reregistered the first ZDS to LSL and NSO has become the second ZDS.
