Register Review

It is a long time since we had to report that there are no new types or sub-types contained in the New Allocations listings – but this month there are none. However, this does provide an opportunity to detail two interesting types that have not been covered in depth before in this column – the Extra 300 and Cessna 400.

The Extra owes its heritage to the Stephens Akro Lazer of which there have been five registered locally, all amateur built with three of these still flying. German aero designer Walter Extra took the basic Stephens design, raised the rear fuselage, improved the aerodynamics of the canopy and completely re-shaped the wing in order to produce an aerobatic aircraft that would be able to match the Russian types that were dominating the World Aerobatic Championships at the time. The result was a single-seat, mid wing, tailwheel machine with a fabric covered steel tube fuselage and wooden wings. The prototype was fitted with a 230hp (172kW) Lycoming engine and first flew during July 1983. Although this turned out to be a formidable aerobatic aircraft, only 15 were produced before the Extra 300 was introduced.

The EA300 boasted a two-seat tandem cockpit, a re-designed composite wing and a 300hp (225kW) Lycoming powerplant. By 1992 Extra had re-visited the single-seat concept and the EA300S had emerged with the mid wing sitting lower than previous models, a slightly shorter wing span and a smaller cockpit to house only one occupant. The obvious next development was a two-seat version which included all the improvements of the single-seater. This was known as the EA300L and is the most popular of all models with over 200 being built.

A small hiccup occurred during 2003 when Extra had used up all its cash on aircraft development and was declared insolvent by the German administrators. The potential of the aircraft was realised by an American investor who moved production to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, but kept the design facility at Dusseldorf, Germany.

Francesco Bruinsma’s Extra EA300, CIZ, has come from Slovakia and is the third of its type to fly in Australia with two of these still active. There are also one EA200, three EA300Ls and two EA300Ss flying in Australia and a single EA300L in New Zealand. Interestingly, there have been five amateur built Stephens Akro Lasers constructed in this country, three of which are still airworthy.

Like the Extra, the Cessna 400 was also developed from an aircraft designed for amateur construction, the Lancair ES.

The ES was a high performance four-seater touring aircraft, supplied from the factory in kit form, with a fixed tricycle undercarriage, composite fuselage and wings and fitted with a 210hp (157kW) Continental engine.

The Super ES version used a 300hp (225kW) powerplant.

Lancair later supplied the ES as a factory complete aircraft known as the Columbia 300 which first flew during 1996 using a 310hp (230kW) engine.

The Columbia production line was then separated from Lancair kit production and a separate company formed, Columbia Aircraft Manufacturing Corporation, to produce the Columbia 300, 350 and 400 models.

By 2004 Columbia was in financial strife with rising production costs and decreasing sales figures and when production ceased there were several unfinished aircraft on the production line with more unsold machines in storage at the factory.

Cessna saw the potential of the Columbia to fit in with its existing model lineup and obtained the factory, production jigs and unsold aircraft and began marketing the aircraft as the Cessna 400 – the world’s fastest single piston engine, fixed undercarriage aircraft.

Fitted with a six cylinder, fuel injected Teledyne Continental engine with twin turbochargers and dual intercoolers, the aircraft claims a top speed of 235kt at 25,000ft cruising altitude with a 1250nm (2315km) range. The cabin is fitted with a Garmin G1000 glass cockpit, side-stick controls and leather upholstery.

In January 2009 Cessna named the aircraft the Corvalis TT, derived from the name of a small town near the production plant called Corvallis, with the TT denoting twin turbos.

(Cessna recently announced it was moving Corvalis production to Independence, Kansas, and shutting down the Oregon plant. ) Interestingly the first Cessna 400 to reach our shores, JEJ, was serial number 001 and the latest, CSV, is 002.

All six aircraft shown as Returning to the Register do so one month or less after being revoked by CASA for “Failure of new owner to apply to become Registration Holder”.

Surely there must be a better way of persuading new owners to complete the transfer paperwork rather than de-registering and then re-registering their aircraft? A surprisingly large number of aircraft are listed in the Deletions section this month, including eight older hot air balloons that have reached the end of their useful lives and have been scrapped.

DH Dove 5 DVE, which has been in open storage at Warnervale, NSW, since 2002, was severely vandalised during January 2007 and has now been de-registered and it is believed to have been donated to the Bankstown Aviation Museum.

There is now only one other Dove 5 registered in Australia, DHI, along with two Dove 8s, EOB and OBI.

Fugro Airborne Surveys has retired two of its five Aero Commander 500s, EXS and KAC, and Toll Aviation has withdrawn and scrapped Swearingen Metro II UZQ.

Exports only account for around 25 per cent of the deletions this issue with the USA and New Zealand in the forefront of destinations. Skyairworld’s E-190s, SXK and SXO, are now registered with AFS Investments of Stamford, Connecticut, marked as N161HQ and N162HQ respectively, although both were exported to Portugal. Virgin’s Boeing 737 VBT is now N737KA with NAS Investments, also at Stamford, while PAC 750XL YIF has now taken up N902ST with Sky Team Aviation at Wilmington, Delaware. The 750XL was only registered in Australia for 10 days to facilitate its delivery flight by Australian Air Ferry of Kempsey, NSW.

Piper Brave BOV is also in the USA now but details of its current status are not yet know. The Brave is one of only two of its type to fly in Australia which have been converted to turbine power.

Heliair’s Aerospatiale Squirrels CPA and RPQ were packed into a container at Adelaide during February and shipped to New Zealand where they have become ZK-HSN and ZK-HDK respectively with Heli Support at Wanaka.

Also now in New Zealand is Thunder hot air balloon ENO and Piper Aztec MTY. Both aircraft made the simple change to Kiwi markings by removing the VH and keeping the same “last three”, with the balloon now operated by Shane Kirkman of Whangarei and the Aztec with Sunair at Mount Maunganui. Sunair operates scheduled services from Tauranga to eight destinations as well as providing multi-engine flight training, engineering and ground handling services and aircraft sales. The venerable Aztec seems to suit its capacity requirements as nine out of its 11 aircraft are Aztecs.

Skyairworld’s ERJ-145s SZF and SZH are now in Ireland although they will undoubtedly move on when new leases are found for them, Cessna 172R Skyhawk NUE has been sold in India, and the Australian Coastwatch operated Islander ZZW is now flying in Japan.

The first production Gippsland Airvan TC, MTF, has gone to PNG where it will be used on missionary work, and elderly BN Islander CSU has also moved north to PNG.

Another Islander on the move is SQS, which was used for many years by Tangalooma Air Taxis ferrying tourists from Brisbane to Tangalooma Island, but is now based on the tiny Pacific island of Kiribati flying as T3-JMR. The Islander is only the 14th aircraft to ever be registered in Kiribati, with only six on the current register.

Of the cancellations due to accidents, JBR was the bright red Midget Mustang that was involved in the much publicised crash at Mornington, Victoria, during January and Cessna 172 Skyhawk ROO was the aircraft that crashed on Christmas day while conducting an annual flyover of a neighbour’s property to celebrate the festive season.

Cessna 150 Aerobat UPY crashed in the Moorabbin training area after it collided in mid-air with Piper Warrior CGT. The Warrior was able to return to Moorabbin with minor damage, but the Aerobat sustained more serious damage and was destroyed on impact with the ground.

With the demise of MacAir, Aero Tropics and Heliair in recent months, the Changes of Owner or Operator section this issue is quite large. West Wing Aviation has acquired part of the Aero Tropics fleet while some of Heliair’s helicopters have been exported, and can be found in the Deletions section, and some have been sold within Australia.

The majority of the MacAir aircraft have been repossessed and the Westpac Bank now has enough aircraft on its books to start a small airline.

The Royal Queensland Aero Club has transferred 10 of its aircraft to the Airline Academy of Australia, which is still part of the aero club, but operates from a different location at Archerfield.

The ability of some people to invent inane company names never ceases to amaze, with Cessna 182 UCW now with Run Run Boogies and Cessna 182s OAG and XTX joining Cannot Be Hidden International.

A recent survey of the PNG register has revealed the subsequent identities of several aircraft exported to that country during the last couple of years that have not been detailed in this column before. As expected, most are helicopters with Bell 407 CJN and Bell 205A AWU now working with Heli Niugini at Madang as P2-HBT and P2-HBX respectively, and Bell LongRangers NDI and RHC are now P2-HFY and P2-HFZ with Helifix Operations at Port Moresby. Also based at Port Moresby are P2-NGA with NG Air which is ex EFT, and P2-IHL of Island Helicopter Services which used to be CJT. At Mendi is Bell 407 ICL which now flies as P2-SHG with South West Air, while at Goroka is Squirrel BXQ which is now P2-FXA with Pacific Helicopters.

Bell LongRanger TCE is based at Kimbe as P2-HSC with Niugini Helicopters, and Manolos Aviation of Rabaul are presently using MBB Bo105 P2-RUH which is ex ISL.

Of the fixed wing aircraft, all have retained the main part of their Australian markings, with Cessna Caravan TWW becoming P2-TWW with Transair at Port Moresby. Air Tractor AT-502 SET made the change to P2-SET with Moresby Aviation, and Cessna A188B Agtruck MXO became P2‑MXO but retains its Australian ownership of North Queensland Aviation at Ingham.

Only two other sprayers have been operated in PNG, Fletcher FU-24 P2-CCF between May 2002 and June 2006, and Cessna Agwagon P2-JXG which flew from December 1998 to January 2007 when it crashed at Ramu.
