Register Review

The New Allocations listing this month contains a broad cross section of aircraft including a couple of new types to Australian skies.

Kevin Chen of Osborne Park, WA, has imported the only Mooney M20D Master to grace Australian skies, MJS, the oldest Beech Baron to be registered in this part of the world, IIA, and an elderly Mooney M20C Mark 21, MJU.

Mooney only built 160 M20D Masters and it has therefore become quite a rare aircraft. It was introduced during 1963 and marketed as an “economy” model with only basic equipment and a fixed undercarriage. Retractable gear could be retrofitted later but there lay the model’s downfall.

Why would someone buy a fixed undercarriage aircraft and retrofit retractable gear later when they could buy an M20C Ranger complete with factory fitted retractable wheels for a few dollars more? The result was Mooney only built 50 M20Ds per year between 1963 and 1966 while it was building almost 700 M20Cs per year during the same period. Al Mooney began building aircraft in his own right during 1948 after he had gained a reputation as an expert design engineer with early US aircraft manufacturers Alexander Aircraft, Marshall Aircraft, Monocoupe, Bellanca and Culver Aircraft. His aircraft sold in moderate numbers until 1961 when the four seat M20A, already known for its performance, was superseded by the all-metal M20B Mark 21 model. Sales figures soared and 2700 M20Bs and M20Cs were sold in the next few years.

Kevin Chen’s second Mooney, MJU, was built during 1965 and was part of a batch of 1170 M20C Mark 21s built between 1964 and 1966.

The Beech 95-55 Baron was developed from the 95 Travel Air and it went on to become one of the most popular light twins in the world. Only 190 95-55 Barons were built during 1961 before the improved 95-A55 was introduced a year later, with only two of the earlier model coming to Australia, CLL and SJU. Both these aircraft were late production 95-55s and while SJU lives on at Stanthorpe, Queensland, CLL became UPJ and was scrapped during 2006.

Kevin Chen’s IIA was an early production machine and thus becomes the oldest Baron to be flown in Australia.

The second new type on the register is Aeroprakt FPNA Valor VLR. The Valor is a high wing, tricycle undercarriage, two-seat light aircraft and is a development of the A22L Foxbat designed by well known Russian designer Yuri Yakovlev and built at Kiev in the Ukraine. The aircraft can be fitted with either an 80hp (60kW) Rotax 912 or a 100hp (75kW) 912S engine. US aircraft distributor Floatplanes and Amphibs (FPNA), based at Sebring, Florida, receives painted airframes on wheels from Aeroprakt and adds the wing coverings of aircraft grade aluminium and fabric. It then installs the wiring, cockpit fittings, avionics and engine and markets the aircraft worldwide as the Valor.

The original Aeroprakt Foxbat has proven very popular in this part of the world with more than 30 on the RA‑Aus register, two on the VH register and three flying in New Zealand. Recently, four FPNA Valors have been added to the RA-Aus register, but VLR is the first to be seen on the CASA listing.

Cessna 175 Skylark BNB has been imported from South Africa and becomes the 19th of its type to come to Australia.

Surprisingly, 12 of these are still active with another flying in New Zealand fitted with tail wheel undercarriage. The 175 was a development of the 172, but with a 175hp (130kW) geared Continental GO-300 engine replacing the 145hp (108kW) powerplant of the 172. The prototype Skylark (N34260) first flew during April 1956 and 1237 basic 175s were manufactured during 1958 and 1959 before the 175A was introduced in 1960.

Cessna has manufactured the largest number of general aviation aircraft in the world and its success has been in part due to its very early policy of following the US car industry’s marketing techniques of releasing a new model each year. Often the only difference was a change of paint scheme or a minor change to the interior trim, but Americans wanted the very latest model and Cessna supplied it.

This policy resulted in the 175A during 1960, the 175B in 1961 and the 175C being the 1962 model. There are still several of the later model 175As, Bs and Cs flying in Australia, but the original 175 Skyhawk remains the most popular.

Bert Filippi has added another CASA Jungman, KIL, to his collection of very rare aircraft. The Jungman is a 1930s German primary trainer that was built under licence in a number of countries including Spain and Japan. Bert’s Jungman has been reported as a Japanese example, but this is incorrect and the confusion seems to have arisen because the aircraft has been painted in Japanese air force colours. There are believed to be no surviving Japanese built machines. The aircraft has been built from spare parts, including a spare fuselage obtained from the Spanish air force by Marcus Bates in Odessa, Texas, and is powered by a four cylinder LOM M332 engine. It has been a 10 year project and Bert reports that the completed aircraft is a pleasure to fly and has become his favourite. Air Tractor AT-802 FFM is the only aircraft Returning to Register this issue. The AT‑802 is the largest Air Tractor available and is fitted with an 800 US gal (3030 litre) hopper, a P&WC PT6A turboprop engine and a two-seat tandem cockpit. FFM is back with Field Air at Ballarat after its second season with Connair at Abbotsford, Canada, on firefighting duties.

Re-registrations usually dominate the Deletions section, but this issue only five aircraft have changed markings and accidents and aircraft being “withdrawn from use” make up the majority of entries.

Beech 95 Travel Air BSW has been withdrawn and scrapped with its bare fuselage being noted at Tyabb during September. Only two 95 Travel Airs have come to Australia with BSW arriving during June 1959 for de Havilland at Bankstown. Racing driver and Ford dealer Bib Stillwell obtained the aircraft three years later and re-registered it BSS, and when he sold it during November 1967 it again changed markings to BSW.

It was damaged at Cessnock, NSW, in September 1979 during a simulated engine failure and has been off the register on several occasions for extended maintenance, but has finally been laid to rest permanently.

Only 302 Beech 95 Travel Airs were built with the model being based on the G35 Bonanza but with a straight tail and with two 180hp (135kW) Lycoming engines replacing the single 200hp (150kW) Continental fitted to the Bonanza.

The lineage of the Travel Air progressed for 10 years through the B95, B95A, D95A and E95, gradually acquiring a swept tail and higher powered engines until it was developed into the very popular 55 Baron.

Seven hot air balloons and two Aerospatiale Dauphin helicopters have also been de-registered after reaching the ends of their useful lives.

This is usual for balloons as they do have a limited life, depending on the number of inflations, but not so usual for helicopters. However, the two Dauphins have worked hard for the last three decades, with LSL coming to Australia during 1991 after operations in the UK and in Hong Kong with the local police and spending the last 17 years with the SLSA Helicopter Rescue Service. PVF arrived new in 1979 and has been heavily utilised ever since by the Victoria Police Air Wing.

Cessna Stationair LMI had an interesting demise as it was blown up for a movie stunt.

The aircraft arrived in Australia during 1988 and was fitted with floats. It was used initially by Seair Pacific to ferry tourists from the Gold Coast to Lady Musgrave Island – hence the registration letters. It continued in the tourist industry with Aviation Tourism Australia based at Hamilton Island who used it extensively around the Whitsundays until Warner Brothers obtained it during February 2007.

The US film company used it for the flying sequences in the film Fools Gold which culminated in the aircraft being blown up. But instead of using a ‘stand-in’ for the final scenes the producers blew up the real aircraft, which not surprisingly resulted in it being completely destroyed.

Of the exports, New Zealand is the favoured destination this month with Cessna 172R EWJ, Pitts S-2S PIG, Boeing 737 VUO and Gippsland Airvan BQY all crossing the Tasman for a new life in the land of the long white cloud.

Cessna Skyhawk EWJ has been retired from General Flying Services/Moorabbin Aviation Academy after 11 years of service and has now joined the extensive training fleet of CTC Aviation Training at Hamilton, flying as ZKXYZ.

VUO, now ZK-PBM, becomes the ninth Boeing 737 to be transferred from the Virgin Blue fleet to Pacific Blue based at Christchurch, and Gippsland Airvan BQY is now with Salt Air at Paihia.

Salt Air operates a very mixed fleet consisting of one each Cessna 172, 207 and 208, Bell JetRanger and Robinson R44 Raven, and now the Gippsland Airvan. Two-seat Pitts Special PIG, previously operated by Sport Aerobatics at Glenbrook, NSW, is now marked as ZK-PFA and is with The Cambridge Flying Machine Company at Cambridge.

Bell 205 CKU and Bell 212 VLK are both ex Oman air force helicopters that were refurbished at Caloundra, Queensland, before export to Canada where they are believed to have been sold to Qwest Helicopters of Fort Nelson, British Columbia.

Beech Super King Air KGT is now in Malaysia marked as 9M-WSK, Air Tractor 502 SET has gone to PNG on a short spraying contract, and Boeing 717 NXB is the first of three Qantaslink 717s destined for Hawaiian Airlines.

Catching up with the subsequent histories of some aircraft exported in recent months, the Catalina Flying Memorial’s PBY Catalina CAT used temporary US markings N160AT for its epic ferry flight from Portugal to Australia during December, but will revert to its very appropriate local registration, CAT, for its operations once domiciled here in Australia. The Catalina Flying Memorial was founded by members of the Seaplane Pilots Association of Australia and is supported by the Sunderland Association, the RAAF Maritime Squadrons and public donations.

Cessna Citation Excel NGH, noted among last issue’s exports, is now known to be operating in Luxemburg as LX-INS, while Regional Pacific Airlines Twin Otter RPZ now flies in New Caledonia as F-OIAQ. Kawasaki BK 117B EMS continues its work as an emergency response helicopter, but now in New Zealand with South Helicopters at Queenstown marked as ZK-IME.
