Register Review

The New Allocations section this issue sees another three Cirrus singles added to the register, two new examples and one imported from the UK.

Paul Smith’s Cirrus SR22, CPZ, has been based at Denham, near London, since 2003 but has been US registered during that time. Late last year Paul decided to fly his Cirrus to Australia and left England during November arriving in time for Christmas.

There are now 72 Cirruses on the local register with four flying in New Zealand – an astonishing tally considering the first, CRF, only arrived in July 2000.

No less than 22 Robinson helicopters are listed including three R22 Beta IIs, three R44 Raven Is and 16 R44 Raven IIs. One of two Australian agents, Heliflite, have been taking advantage of the US/Australian exchange rate and has been offering customers Robinsons at the lowest price ever with the market responding accordingly.

Heliflite recently celebrated 30 years of selling Robinson Helicopters in Australia and has achieved some remarkable milestones during that time. Seven R22s were sold during 1977, Heliflite’s first year as Australian agents.

The R22 Alpha was first seen in 1983 and two years later the first R22 Beta arrived. In 1991 Heliflite brought R22 c/n 2000 to Australia and during 1996 the R22 Beta II and Mariner II were introduced. The first of many R44s was imported in 1994 and this was followed by an R44 Newscopter model in 2003 as well as the hugely successful fuel injected R44 Raven II version. 2006 saw the first R44 Newscopter in New Zealand and R22 c/n 4000 in Australia.

With 75 new Robinsons arriving in Australia over the last four months and the prototype five seat, turbine powered R66 recently making its first flight in the US, the future is looking very bright indeed for Robinson locally.

AYB is the second Liberty XL2 to be registered with at least three more known to be in the country with Nigel Hutchinson-Brooks of Liberty Aircraft at Korumburra, Victoria.

The Liberty is built at Melbourne, Florida, and is based on the very successful French designed Europa kit plane, of which more than 900 have been built in 30 countries worldwide. The two-seat, single engined machine, which features computerised electronic ignition system (FADEC), is very squarely aimed at the pilot training market but is equally at home as a touring aircraft. Liberty Aerospace in the US has recently announced a 600 aircraft purchase/manufacturing agreement with China, considered the largest future market for light aircraft outside the US.

Graham Parker’s Schleicher glider, GTF, is officially listed as an ASW 27-18E, but it is in fact an ASG 29-18E. The ASG 29‑18 was specifically developed for competition in the world 18m class and if the results of the 2007 NSW Gliding Championships are any indication the aircraft is the best.

Graham took out first with Hank Kauffmann second and Makoto Ichikawa third – all in ASG 29-18s. Of the four ASG 29-18s currently flying in Australia Graham’s is the only 18E Model, indicating that it is fitted with an 18hp (13kW) two-cylinder Solo engine. The lightweight engine drives a 1. 2m diameter, two-blade propeller which folds away into the fuselage directly behind the cockpit when not in use.

In a rather complicated registration shuffle Rutan Defiant OOI and Pilatus PC‑12 OOU have changes markings. In order to facilitate this the PC-12 became DQV for four days so that the Defiant could become OOU and then the PC-12 took up the vacated OOI.

Six aircraft have returned to the register with Bell LongRanger BXU only de-registered for two weeksafter an aborted export to China. The sale may still go ahead so we may see the helicopter listed again very shortly. Flyspray Aviation’s Cessna Agwagons EPW and WJR, along with Ag Cat LCT, are back after being revoked by CASA during July last year and Hughes 300C OCD returns after being “withdrawn from service” last October.

Forty-two aircraft are listed in the Deletions section this month, but almost half of these will not be lost to Australian skies as 13 have been re-registered, six have joined the RA-Aus register, and two of the five listed as “withdrawn from use” are likely to fly again sometime in the future. Elderly and much travelled Aero Commander 680FL, DCA, is known to be in storage in Western Australia awaiting some TLC and Cessna Golden Eagle DRB is surely in too good condition to be scrapped.

Two Agusta Koalas have been exported, HFQ to Botswana and PSR to New Zealand. PSR is now flying as ZK-IHS with Heli Solutions at Tauranga and becomes only the second Koala on the Kiwi register.

Piper Seneca JAQ and Cirrus NGT have also gone to New Zealand where the Seneca is now ZK-UPX with Peter Upton of Cable Bay and the Cirrus has been registered ZK-YUG to Capital Aviation at Wellington.

The Cirrus is a Generation 2 GTS Model and its export gets a little more complicated than this listing indicates. The aircraft needed to be Australian registered for its ferry flight across the Tasman so it was de-registered in New Zealand and re-registered in Australia for the flight before finally being changed again after delivery. No doubt this ‘double shuffle’ will be reflected in next month’s listing.

Also exported to New Zealand is elderly Bell 47J Ranger RTK. This helicopter has been dormant at Caboolture, Queensland, as JAV for a number of years and was eventually cancelled in the Part 47 clear out during July 2006. It was restored to the register in October as RTK so it seems that it may have gone to New Zealand as a source of spares for a Bell 47J rebuild project.

Cessna Citation HVH has been sold in the US and now flies as N501DA with Dove Air of Fletcher, North Carolina, which is a strange allocation as it is a 500 Model not a 501, and Bell 407 ICL has gone north to PNG.

Flying schools in Malaysia are scouring the world for used Cherokees and Senecas to fill the needs of the rapidly expanding pilot training market in that country and SVS is the latest to be sourced from Australia, while, as predicted, Hawker 800XP SCY, previously used by the Queensland government, is now active in the United Arab Emirates. ZKM is the second PC-12 imported from Switzerland by Pilatus Australia at Adelaide for an Indonesian customer, both registered ZKM and both have now been delivered to their new owners.

There has not been space in recent issues to comment on Changes of Owner or Operators. However, Tiger Moth ABL is worthy of a mention this month. Steven Johnson has acquired the vintage Tiger Moth from Mike Stacy who has owned and flown the aircraft for the last 20 years. ABL was one of 100 UK built Tiger Moths supplied to the RAAF during 1940 to help start the Empire Air Training Scheme prior to local production meeting the demand. The aircraft was delivered to RAAF Richmond, NSW, during February 1940 and later served with the Elementary Flying Training School at Archerfield, Benalla and Western Junction Steven Johnson’s immaculately restored Tiger Moth ABL. (Mike Stacy) before being drafted to a Care and Maintenance Unit in June 1945 for disposal.

Registered BND during October 1948 it spent the first nine years of its civilian life in Tasmania before moving to Super Spread Aviation at Moorabbin, which re-registered it SSP and modified it as a crop sprayer. With the arrival of more modern aircraft for the crop spraying role the Tiger Moth was retired in 1964 and stored in the open for a number of years before being rescued and rebuilt as ABL. Mike Stacey purchased the aircraft in early 1987 and set about rebuilding the Tiger Moth to its original 1939 specifications, including a new instrument panel incorporating reconditioned WW2 instruments. The aircraft was repainted in its 1939 matt camouflage RAF colours taken from WW2 master colour chips from official sources in the UK.

The result is probably one of the most accurately restored Tiger Moths to early WW2 specifications in the world.

Following up on some Australian aircraft now flying overseas, Agusta A 119 Koala CFO, which was shown in the December deletions as being exported to Ireland, is indeed active in that country, but using US markings N119HH.

Shempp-Hirth Nimbus glider WVY, listed in the June 2007 deletions, is now registered in Germany as D-8162 and not in Holland as officially quoted, and Bell 212 BHO is now flying with Heli Europe in Luxemburg as LX-HJC.

The big Bell helicopter was used in Western Australia between October 1981 and January 1984 by Bristow Helicopters and has seen service in the UK, Nigeria and Canada before taking up residence in Luxembourg
