Register Review

This month’s New Allocations listing seems to be dominated by Robinson helicopters with the local agents, Heliflite, taking advantage of the strong Australian dollar and buying up big, at the right price, to satisfy the local market.

As well as new Robinsons, locally built hot air balloons, amateur built sport aircraft and imported piston singles, twins and pure jets make up an interesting assortment of aircraft to comment on this issue – plus lightning strikes.

Representing the local aircraft manufacturing industry is the Canberra Brumby Syndicate’s Brumby BSZ. Brumby Aircraft Australia and its associate company PG Aviation are based at Cowra, NSW, and produce the Brumby LSA as a factory built, fly-away, aircraft or a quick build kit for the amateur builder. The Brumby is an all metal low wing training, touring or sport aircraft with side-byside seating for two, dual controls, electric flaps and a steerable nose wheel. Tri-cycle undercarriage, basic VFR panel and forward sliding canopy are standard although a full IFR panel, tail wheel and gull-wing canopy are available as options. Engine choices are the Australian built Jabiru 2200 and 3300 or an imported Rotax 912.

McDonald Administration Services’ Gulfstream Commander LMC becomes the only Jetprop 1000 operating in this part of the world although several examples have been flown locally in the past. The biggest user of the Jetprop 1000 in Australia was the Department of Aviation/Civil Aviation Authority, which operated six of the type between 1983 and 1993. The Gulfstream Commander was a direct descendant of the Aero Commander line of high wing twins developed by Ted Smith, former project engineer with Douglas Aircraft.

Smith left Douglas in 1945 to form his own company and the resulting range of Aero Commander 500s became very well respected throughout the world for their speed, comfort and reliability.

During 1958 Aero Commander became part of the Rockwell company and later Rockwell merged with North American, with the Commanders being built by North American Rockwell (Aero Commander Division) at its original plant at Bethany, Oklahoma. The natural progression was to add turboprop engines to the much developed airframe and the first 680T Turbo Commander flew during December 1964. By February 1981 Rockwell had decided to move out of general aviation to concentrate on military contractsand the growing biz jet market, and sold all rights to the Commander range to Gulfstream American which continued to build and develop the turboprop Commander range.

The Gulfstream Commander 690 series was the most popular of the Turbo Commander models with LMC starting life on the Bethany production line as a model 690D to be fitted with TPE331-5 turboprop power plants. However, the type was quickly superseded by the 695A model which used more powerful TPE331-10 engines and LMC became one of four 690Ds to be upgraded to 695As while on the production line.

In all 2067 piston engined Commanders along with 1110 turboprops were built by Aero Commander, Rockwell, North American and Gulfstream, making it one of the most successful twins ever produced.

Andrew Rowley’s Rans Coyote YLE has been a labour of love for the past four years and should have had its maiden flight during the life of this issue. It was built from a kit supplied by Rans and is finished in an attractive blue and white colour scheme. The aircraft is powered by a Rotax 912S engine and the markings were chosen to represent, Wile E Coyote.

Piper Mojave OGW and Dash 8 QQG are back in Australia after being exported some time ago. The Dash 8 first came to this country during 1992 and was operated by Sunstate Airlines for 12 years as TND.

During this time it was unlucky enough to be struck by lightning three times inflight, each time resulting in only minor damage. It was obtained by Queensland Regional Airlines in July 2004 and almost immediately moved to PNG where it became P2-MCM. It also spent some time with Polynesian Airlines as 5W-FAA before returning to PNG and thence back to Australia as QQG with Skytrans Regional Airlines at Cairns.

Mojave OGW was first imported by the RFDS for use in Western Australia and became HFD in September 1985. By 1993 the RFDS was standardising with the Beech Super King Air and HFD moved to Airlines of Tasmania to continue its life as an aerial ambulance on a local contract. During this time it too was struck by lighting while flying near Launceston in January 1994.

It was exported to the US during May 2001 to become N7LG but it is now back in Australia with Wingaway Air and registered OGW.

Two aircraft are listed Returning to the Register this issue, David Buchan’s Cessna 210 Centurion DCX and Piper Seminole NLO.

The Centurion has been static for more than 12 months after the registration was revoked by CASA during June last year. Seminole NLO was hit by lightning over Phillip Island, Victoria, on May 7 last year inflicting major damage to the electrical systems on board and necessitating an emergency landing back at Moorabbin.

Luckily nobody was injured during the incident, but the aircraft’s electrics were so badly damaged that the aircraft was sold for salvage.

It seems that the intricate wiring systems have been replaced and the Seminole is now flying again with General Flying Services.

In the Deletions section two National Jet Express Boeing 727s are shown, leaving only four of the type still officially registered in Australia. VLF departed for the US during September and is now registered N982JM with JM 21695 Ltd of Kansas City. TXH has been sold as scrap and it is believed this airframe will be broken up in Australia with all useful parts exported to the US. Of the four remaining 727s on the Australian register, VLI and VLH are owned by National Jet Express, DHE is operated by Asian Express for DHL, while TBS has been static at the Aviation Australia facility in Brisbane for some years.

Kavanagh balloons SBQ and AAJ have been withdrawn from use after their envelopes had reached the end of their useful life and Rob Fox’s very rare Genairco, UOG, has also been grounded to spend the rest of its days as a non-flying tribute to Australia’s aviation history. Often referred to as a “de Havilland copy” the Genairco was in fact a fully Australian designed and built aircraft.

Eleven Genaircos were built in two versions, the Cabin and the Open. The Cabin had accommodation for four passengers in an enclosed area ahead of the pilot who sat in an exposed cockpit behind. The Open had the same arrangement but with a two-seat exposed passenger compartment.

UOG is an Open version and was reputed to have been flown regularly by well known Sydney pilot Goya Henry during the 1940s. It has spent much of its later life in Joe Drage’s museum at Wodonga and latterly at Air World at Wangaratta before Rob Fox obtained it during 2004.

Eight aircraft are shown as being exported including Executive Airlines Citation Sovereign EXA which is now flying in the US as N827DC with TFA Ltd of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Closer to home Beech Super King Air IMP is now in New Zealand, marked as ZK-MAN and based at Ardmore, near Auckland, with Hawker Pacific NZ.

The Super King Air arrived in Australia last year and spent only four months with CSG Services in Darwin before being returned to the importers, Hawker Pacific, for export to New Zealand.

Cessna 182 Skylane DBT is now flying in Slovakia, Cessna 172 Skyhawk STE in India and PA-28 Warrior JRZ is now active in Thailand. In the past it has been difficult to trace the subsequent histories of expatriate Australian aircraft that have been exported to East European and Asian countries such as these, but with the internet now linking aviation enthusiasts worldwide there is not much that eludes the serious aerophile, and it is hoped that more will be revealed about these aircraft in future Register Reviews. o
