Years of planning the future structure of the RAAF’s air combat fleet has been reversed with the likely acquisition of 24 Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornets as a “bridging” capability between the F-111 and F/A-18A/B to the F-35 JSF.

Defence Minister Dr Brendan Nelson’s office confirmed in late December that discussions with Boeing were taking place, with a formal announcement on the decision expected in the next few months (possibly in the May federal budget). The aircraft are expected to enter service from 2010, with an IOC (Initial Operating Capability) pencilled in for 2011, allowing the retirement of the RAAF’s F-111 force.
