The latest member of Cessna's Citation business jet family, the Citation Excel, flew for the first time on February 29. The 70-minute test flight took off from McConnell Air Force Base (the prototype was built at Cessna's Pawnee Engineering Facilities) and involved basic stability, flap extension and retraction, controllability, trim actuation, and slow flight exploration before the Excel landed at Wichita's Mid-Continent Airport. Cessna's test pilots were pleased with the jet's handling, remarking it flew a lot like a CitationJet. Cessna already has 88 Excels on order, with deliveries commencing in the first quarter of 1998. The US$6.6m six-to-eight passenger Excel features Pratt & Whitney Canada PW545 turbofans, Honeywell Primus 1000 avionics, trailing-link landing gear, and single-point refueling. (Cessna)

Ansett’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Graeme McMahon has retired, replaced by Hugh Thorburn (previously the manager of Ansett International) in the new position of Chief Operating Officer. Also at Ansett, general commercial manager Gary Smith has resigned while head of airline operations Ron Entsch has retired. Craig Wallace is the new manager of Ansett International, while Rick Ellis has become General Manager Sales and Marketing, replacing Gary Smith. Lindsay Tanner is the new Federal Opposition’s Shadow Transport Minister, while Arch Bevis is the Shadow Defence Minister. Max Hazelton has ceased to be an employee of the airline he founded and instead he has been contracted by his private company to provide consultancy services to Hazelton Airlines until May 1997. Also at Hazelton, Laurel Hazelton has retired as a Director, Des Nicholl has joined the board and a further board member was due to be appointed at the time of writing. The new Chief Executive of New Zealand’s Ministry of Transport is Stewart Milne, while Jon Macilree is the MoT’s new head of international relations. A streamlining of Malaysia Airlines’ administration in Australia sees Sabarudin Ismail, previously District Manager Far North Queensland, become District Manager Queensland/PNG, while Terence Swampillai, previously the Darwin based District Manager NT, relocates to Adelaide to become District Manager SA/NT. The Aerospace Foundation’s new Director of Publicity and Promotions for the Avalon Airshow is Leonora Curnick. EgyptAir has appointed Rob Howard as its Sales and Marketing Manager Australia/NZ. Freedom Air’s former Sydney Airport Manager Chris Youlten has become Freedom’s Manager Australia, replacing Tim Wagg, who has joined Ansett as its loyalty programme manager. Also at Freedom, Russell Gray has taken up the new position of Sales Manager Australia. Tony Bracy has filled the new Ansett position of Business Systems Manager.

Cathay Pacific has posted a $HK3.0bn ($A500m) net profit for 1995 on revenues of $HK30.5bn ($A5.1bn), up 25% and 12% respectively on the 1994 result. Rolls-Royce’s preliminary results for 1995 include a profit before tax of £175m ($A341m) (up from £101m in 1994), which included a $30m ($A58m) contribution from the Allison Engine Company. Sales increased from $3.16bn to $3.60bn ($A7bn), including Allison sales of $377m ($A735m). Rolls-Royce says it took nearly 30% of all orders for commercial aero engines in 1995.
