The first flight of the Fairchild Republic T-46A took place at Edwards AFB on October 15, flown by the company’s test pilot, Jim Martinez. The 1 hour 12 min flight was uneventful and the T-46A reached speeds up to 175 kt and an altitude of 15,000 ft (4,570 m).
The launch order for the Boeing 747-400 was announced on October 22 with a contract from Northwest Airlines for 10 aircraft. Boeing has decided to fit 1.8 m (6 ft) high winglets to the 747-400, the first example of which is due to roll out at Everett in the first quarter of 1988. Using the same fuselage as the 747-300, the 747-400 incorporates numerous changes, particularly the use of advanced aluminium alloys, a digital two crew flight deck and increased fuel capacity. It will have a gross weight of up to 385,560 kg (850,000 lb).
