Part of the 1995 theme of Oshkosh was Jet Days. This Grumman F9F-2 Panther is one of six of the type on the US civil register. The Panther was used in the Korean War operating off United States Navy aircraft carriers. During the show it flew alongside the Sabre and MiG-15 to show three types from the Korean era.

Oshkosh ’95 Celebrates The End Of Ww2 Anniversary With Gusto

For the warbird enthusiast the 1995 Oshkosh Convention had the biggest and best Warbirds gathering yet with some 150 aircraft in the air at one time

In addition to the warbirds this year the aircraft and commercial displays had been expanded and clearly endorsed Oshkosh as the general aviation showcase of America and indeed the world. ‘See us at Oshkosh’ means to be at the one aviation convention and airshow that really counts. 1995 was the year that the Australians took Oshkosh by storm. Not only were there close to 600 people present from ‘Down Under’ but Jon Johanson of Adelaide was present with the RV-4 that he built and was flying across the world. On a more sober note was the fact that overall visitor numbers were down from the past few years along with reductions in visiting aircraft and only a minuscule increase in display aircraft.

The reasons for the decreases were not clearly identified but Wisconsin is one American state still suffering from the recession and this no doubt affected the potential visitors from up to 900km radius. Other possible reasons were the end of WW2 celebrations across the country that would have taken the time and dollars of a number of WW2 veterans who make up a good chunk of the visitors. From July 28 to August 14 the large flight of WW2 warbirds, entitled Freedom Flight America, (refer Warbirds column this issue) would also have affected aircraft and people numbers as the flight made its way across the country. Yet another reason suggested was that for the past few years Oshkosh has always been top heavy with more mature aged citizens than younger people. Perhaps this year they simply opted to stay at home.
