Lessons To Be Learned?

A review into the recent spate of US military aircraft crashes has been called for with the suggestion that “military drawdown” (budget cuts and restrictions) may have contributed. In the space of a few weeks recently the USAF lost an F-15, T-38, F-117, C-130, F-16 and C-21; the National Guard lost an A-10 and the US Navy lost an F/A-18. The accidents resulted in the deaths of some 14 crewmembers and passengers and injured 20 people on the ground whilst the replacement value of the aircraft involved approaches a billion dollars. The review has been called for by Democrat politician Ike Skelton, who is concerned that constraints on resources for training, reduced flying hours and a lack of spare parts may have contributed to the accidents. No doubt Australia will make careful note of the findings as a lack of currency has played a part in several recent RAAF accidents.
