The Qualimetrics Inc sensors in the remote weather farm, feed actual conditions to a computer which translates the details into a synthesised voice broadcast. The information is also recorded on paper and sent to the Bureau of Meteorology. The ceilometer (foreground with red band) detects the cloud base height. Over a period of observations, the computer establishes a trend in cloud cover and reports it as being scattered, broken or overcast. (Rod Pascoe)

Gps On Track For Armidale
Local Differential Global Positioning System (LDGPS) precision approaches will soon be possible at Armidale Regional Airport. The owners and operators of the airport, Dumaresq Shire Council, realise the value of their airport to the growth and development of the region. The council has been gradually upgrading the navigation aids over the past few years to improve access to the airport and, to that end, has an option to purchase a Honeywell/Pelorus local-area DGPS for precision approaches — subject to approval and certification.
Armidale airport is the highest commercial airport in Australia at 3556 feet above sea level. In the past, low cloud and fog have caused some flights to be diverted. A Pelorus DME was installed to supplement the existing NDB (which was itself repositioned and co-sited with the DME) to reduce landing minima from over 1200 to 534 feet. The council also installed Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPI), the first example in Australia. There is also a Runway End Identifier Lighting System (REILS) to further improve runway visibility in poor conditions.
