Many General Aviation aircraft which were fitted with DME-A will soon have an obsolete piece of kit on board. With the move towards GPS as a supplementary navigation aid, there is the opportunity for VFR by day pilots to augment their navigation with an inexpensive GPS receiver. The DME function is also catered for with GPS. The hole left in the instrument panel by DME-A will soon be forgotten or even filled in by a panel mounted GPS.

End of the Two Dme System
In December this year, the CAA will switch off all its domestic Distance Measuring System beacons, leaving only the 1000MHz system in operation. But will the hole left in the instrument panel also leave a hole in pilots ability to safely navigate?
The CAA’s DME Transition Project will see the removal of the Australian Domestic DME (DME-A) equipment at all 107 sites by the end of 1995. This will bring Australia’s DME network into line with the rest of the world.
