Certainly there is no argument that the world will need a 600-900 seat megajet like the proposed A3XX at some time in the early 21st Century, the precise launch timing though is the hard thing to guess. A launch in 1997 would for instance see the aircraft enter service around 2004. Many in the industry think this is about five years too early, which if correct would allow Boeing the ideal opportunity to launch the relatively minimal cost 747-500. If this occurred it would be extremely doubtful if any manufacturer would envisage challenging the sales success of this aircraft until at least 2010.

Airbus A3:XX and the Super Jumbo Battle

Australian Aviation July 1995

The loose grouping of Airbus Industrie, Boeing and the various major European based Airbus consortium partners has just completed its two year in-depth design feasibility study into the market and engineering viability of an early 21st century Very Large Aircraft. It is now anticipated that a decision to either proceed or delay further development will be announced early next year.

The VLA of course is the airliner that the whole world knows is inevitable. Upwards of 1000 passengers in a single aircraft is something that is difficult to comprehend as these words are written, though probably no more so than in the early sixties when the original concept of the 747 was first mooted. At that stage the 707 and DC-8 were only in their infancy and the thought that their size could be more than doubled in one fell stroke was something that even the most forward thinking airframe and airline executives of the time would have found difficult to believe.
