Minibus: Beyond Airbus
British Aerospace and the Italo-French Atr organisation announced on January 26 they would merge the marketing, sales and customer support operations of their regional aircraft ranges into a single group. The group, owned equally by Alenia, Aerospatiale and Bae, will combine the two Atr models, the Jetstream 31 and 41 and, surprisingly, the Avro Rj range. Bae added that it hoped more manufacturers would join the new organisation. This is why: 29 seats, Jetstream 41; 30 seats, Dornier 328; 36 seats, Saab 340; 37 seats, de Havilland Dash 8-100; 42 seats, Atr 42; 50 seats, Fokker 50; 50 seats, de Havilland Dash 8-300; 50 seats, Saab 2000; 50 seats, Canadair Rj; 64 seats, Atr 72; 64 seats, Jetstream 61; 79 seats, Fokker 70; 85 seats, Rj85. That is the somewhat overbloated range of regional aircraft in the 30 to 85 seat category.
It is by far the most saturated of all aircraft markets, without counting the planned Embraer 145, Iptn N-250 and Atr 82, the Ilyushin Il-114 or the 100 seaters that bridge the gap between the big regionals and the 737 market. In addition to squadrons of used F27s, 748s, Shorts 330/360 and F28s. Exacerbating the oversupply, airline demand has been extremely soft since the end of the late 1980s boom, so most of these aircraft between 1991 and late ’94 have endured slack sales. In recent years none has been a truly impressive performer. And without doubt the least impressive of them all is the Jetstream 61, the latest incarnation of what was once the Avro 748, the Hawker Siddeley 748, the Bae 748 and, after a thorough modernisation, the Atp.
