What A Disaster!
How many years did Sydney wait for its third runway — fifteen, twenty, twenty five years? And now it’s a reality it has become little more than a never ending nightmare for hundreds of thousands of Sydney residents, the Fac, the Caa and the airlines themselves. A great tragedy for all involved that something that held so much promise has become one of the greatest political embarrassments and sources of community loathing that Sydney has ever known.
And why? Well, you probably don’t need me to tell you why as Laurie Brereton (The Minister For Stuffing Things Up) moved quickly to ensure the closure of the cross (07/25) runway rather than using it to a limited extent in conjunction with the new runway and the existing four kilometre 16/34. And why would this be? Would it be because the honourable minister just happens to have his electorate situated at the eastern end of the now deactivated cross runway while his political buddy, Gary Punch (remember when he was Aviation Minister — wow!) resides at the opposite end. As these words are written it is extremely quiet in Breretown and Punchville though not elsewhere where the constant flow of aircraft begins at dawn and runs till most people are already tucked away in bed. It is these people who have been fed a raw prawn by Minister Brereton and as usual it is the aviation industry which is hurting as a result.
