The Winjeel cockpit is large and well thought out though some of the supplementary gauges are located in odd places. How many young aviators have gained their wings aboard these wonderful trainers is a thought that must surely stir those fortunate enough to own and fly such a wonderful aircraft. (Jim Thorn)
Flight Impressions- CAC Winjeel
Sampling ‘Shabby Blue One’ The Ca-25 Winjeel
Non-flying people might think there is something wrong with me, but I know most pilots will understand when I recount that on honeymoon last year, at a remote West Australian seaside resort, I was only able to forget about aircraft until I heard the sound of a Gipsy Major overhead. Then, a couple of hours later, I was upside-down in a Tiger Moth, my new bride smiling indulgently upwards a thousand metres below. So it should be no surprise that, when back in Perth on holiday with my parents-in-law this February, Karen and I took part in the SAAA’s and SABC’s city centre fly-in. Here we met the convivial Don Williamson, a generous and exuberantly extroverted ex WW2 fighter pilot and retired airline captain, and his pride and joy, the CA-25 Winjeel known to the locals as the ‘gin-wheel’.
