CAA’s New Airspace Proposals Draw Fire

Long Running Airspace Saga Moves Forward Though Not In Line With Industry Ambitions

Another episode in the long running saga of determining an appropriate airspace structure for Australia has just been released by the Caa. The latest document is titled “Airspace, a strategic study” and is the culmination of a year long review of all possible options by the Caa, following the deferral of the Icao based airspace system proposed for introduction on November 11 1993. It is essential to point out at this stage that the document is a discussion paper and not the final airspace plan, although clearly it is what the Caa wants to see introduced.

The Authority states that “the consultation process will run for at least two months in order for industry associations to adequately apprise their members of the issues and prepare an appropriate response to the Authority”. However, observing that the closing date for submissions is March 1 1995 and that most licensed pilots received their copy of the document only days before Christmas, it is difficult to see how any meaningful input from individuals to their Associations will be possible in that time scale.
