Externally the C-130j will be little different from the prototype Hercules which first flew four decades ago in August 1954. Compared with the C-130e and H, the only obvious differences are the six bladed Dowty propellers and lack of external fuel tanks.

The RAAF has recently received budget approval to acquire 12 new generation C-130J Hercules Ii airlifters. Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company’s Vice President for Airlift Programmes, Al Hansen, exclusively briefed Australian Aviation on this latest incarnation of the immortal Hercules.

The Lockheed C-130J Hercules Ii is the most significant and comprehensive update of the venerable Hercules design yet. The privately funded Hercules Ii development programme takes a 1950’s technology aircraft and updates it for the 21st century, providing significant gains in a number of key areas such as operating costs and performance, without the expense of creating an all-new design.
