Bombardier has handed over the first production Canadair CL-415 firebomber to France's Securite Civile. Securite Civile launched the CL-415 with a 1991 order for 12 aircraft. The first was handed over at a special ceremony on April 29 at Canadair's Dorval aircraft assembly facility, though it will not enter service until this September due to crew training requirements. Canadair also holds CL-415 orders from the aerial fire fighter organisations of Quebec and Italy. (Canadair)

Airports Selloff Debate Continues Amidst Controversy:
The Federal Government’s plan to sell off the 23 airports controlled by the FAC and dismantle the Corporation by 1997-98 continues to raise considerable discussion and has attracted some overseas interest. BAA Plc (the former British Airports Authority) has already expressed an interest in Tullamarine, Coolangatta and the yet to be built Sydney West (Badgerys Creek), while merchant bank Hambros is looking to form a consortium of local and overseas partners following the interest shown by financial houses Price Waterhouse and Phillips Fox. Coolangatta has also been subject to a high level of interest with the Gold Coast, 1\veed and Albert Councils possible purchasers. Coolangatta would most likely be upgraded to international status if it was sold. gated by the State Government with view to increasing exports. Elsewhere, Brisbane City Council is investigating ways of purchasing Brisbane Airport, including a public float. The union movement is opposing the proposed privatisation of the airports. The Public Sector Union is lobbying on the grounds that private monopoly ownership would result in prohibitively high charges at the profitable airports and taxpayer funded subsidies for the rest. It also dislikes the notion that competition between airports will lower costs, saying somewhat logically that it’s destinations which compete, not airports. New Qantas Reservationssystem:
Qantas will install the BABS reservations system over thenext 18 months to replace the existing QANTAM and TAARSAN systemsused for many years by Qantas and Australian Airlines, respectively, when they were separate entities. The use of a single reservations system for Qantas’ international and domestic operations will fully integrate all aspects of its booking and passenger handling systems. BABS has been developed by Qantas’ major shareholder, British Airways, and has been sold to other airlines around the world. The airline will invest $15m in the new system.
