Installing a CD-ROM

Usually this article reviews software first, then comments on hardware developments. Of necessity, this order will be reversed this month, as I describe how to install a CD-ROM, then review a flight simulator which is issued in CD-ROM format.

Most people will be familiar with music compact discs. Some bright spark realised that since the music was “digitised”, the compact disc could also be used to store computer software. Over the past year, the computer version, the “Compact Disc – Read Only Memory (CD-ROM)” has advanced so rapidly that it is fast becoming a consumer product. Prices for CD-ROM drives have fallen rapidly, and an increasing proportion of new computers include a CD-ROM and a sound card as the basic fit. This combination of equipment is generally labelled a “multi-media” computer.
