The unrelentless Soviet Bloc invasion of the Australian warbird scene continues with the recent historic first flight of a MiG-21 in this country. The former Polish air force MiG-21 is owned appropriately by Sonic Aviation and was restored by Winrye at Bankstown. The historic first flight took place from Sydney airport (it had to be trucked from Bankstown as that airport's runways are too short in length for a safe takeoff), with Squadron Leader Phil Frawley at the controls. It is seen here being escorted into RAAF Base Williamtown by an F/A-18 Hornet of 77 Squadron, where it is being based as part of the Fighterworld Museum. (Defence PR)

Easter Saaa Mangalore Gathering
Over the Easter break, the Sport Aircraft Association held its annual convention and airshow at Mangalore airport in central Victoria. As always, the event was well attended by many homebuilt enthusiasts and their aircraft. The event also attracted a good number of warbirds, antiques and classics.
In the transport department, there were four Dh Dove series aircraft, one Dh Heron and two Drovers. Douglas Dc-3s Vh-Aes and Vh-Abr were also present. The Miles Falcon, Vh-Aat, was noted as was Tony Green’s Globe Swift, Vh-Xtg. Visitors from afar included Mooney Cadet Vh-Jxs. Another popular display was the flight of the Beech Starship demonstrator with a Vari Eze formatting on each wingtip. Shades of Star Wars!
