Pictured is the first of 27 maritime search and rescue U-125s for the Japanese Air Self Defence Force in the advanced stages of construction on Raytheon's Corporate Jets line in the UK. The U-125 differs from the standard Hawker 800 from which it is derived in a number of ways, including the 360 degree search radar pod underneath the nose radome, the special antenna array on top of the fuselage and special large size observation windows. Single Engine IFR Rpt/ Night Progress
The Australian Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) Industry Discussion Paper on ‘Commercial Passenger Carrying Operations in Single Engine Aeroplanes Under the IFR and at Night’ is still attracting much comment well after the official closing date for such. There appears to be two reasons why modern single turbine aircraft should be considered for commercial passenger carrying operations at night and under IFR.
Firstly, the existing aircraft at the bottom end of the low capacity RPT fleet, typified by the long out of production Piper PA31 Chieftain and Cessna 400 series aircraft, are becoming old and tired. Clearly they will need to be replaced in the not too distant future in order to maintain existing standards. The problem facing operators and regulators alike is that apart from the new single turbine aircraft, there does not seem to be any commercially viable alternative on most of the routes served by the ageing light twins.
