Baggage begins its skyward journey, a common sight repeated tens of thousands of times daily at airports near and far. However, it only takes one instance of abuse of the Dangerous Goods Act to place in jeopardy an entire flight and its passengers. Think carefully before you pack or ship suspect goods. (Jim Thorn)

Dangerous Goods a Concern for the Aviation Industry
In June 1991, while unloading passenger baggage in Darwin, porters noticed smoke rising from a suitcase.
Further investigation revealed that a book of matches had caught fire. The incident was one of six similar occurrences in Australia in the past three years. The simple fact is that book matches can and do ignite when subject to the type of vibrations experienced by suitcases stacked in an aircraft cargo compartment.
In March 1992, a Middle East shipper sent dental supplies to a colleague in Sydney. The supplies were sent by post and the consignment was transported by air both internationally and domestically. The dental supplies included a glass container of about 100mls of mercury. The glass container broke during transport and leaked mercury into the aircraft hold. The leakage was discovered and subsequently cleaned up at great expense.
