The US National Transportation Safety Board has still not given the all clear for the autopilot systems aboard Boeing 757 and 767 twinjets. To date there have been 29 incidents where the autopilot has behaved unpredictably. Whilst these incidents have not led to an actual crash the NTSB fears the problem could become a contributing factor if not resolved. It is st not known whether or not an autopilot malfunction caused a United 767 to depart the runway at Frankfurt recently. Boeing and Collins are working on the problem, whilst all operators, including Qantas and Ansett, have checked their 767 systems in accordance with NTSB and FAA guidelines.

Time for a Rethink?
The past year has certainly been bad news for the Civil Aviation Authority. Firstly, there was the very public and extremely embarrassing bloodletting over the TAAATS contract, followed by ongoing claims of low morale, confused management and finally the eleventh hour decision to abandon the introduction of a revised airspace classification system.
The TAAATS decision will cost Australian aviation dearly, probably at least $200m in additional costs while the airspace fiasco not only saw millions wasted in wasted prelaunch activity but some say a million dollars a week in increased service charges due to its not being implemented on schedule.
