The US Navy has commissioned a study of how it can keep the carrier based Lockheed S-3 Viking anti submarine and anti surface vessel platform in service through to 2015. Through a service life assessment programme (SLAP) Lockheed will recommend measures and modifications required to increase the types useful Me from 13,000 hours to 17,500. The Viking SLAP is part of a US Navy drive to keep important out of production aircraft in service as long as possible, in light of recent defence budget cuts. It felt that no structural modifications will need to be performed before 2000, while a S-3B avionics upgrade is planned. (Wally Civitico)

Controls Caused Gripen Crash:
The crash of a Saab Gripen fighter during an air show at Stockholm in early August was caused by a known problem with thefly-by-wireflight controls. The Gripen was completing a 360 turn at the low speed of 154 knots (285kmh) at a height of 900ft (280m) when the nose suddenly dropped. When pilot Lars Radestrom tried to correct there was no proper response, the aircraft rolled through 20 degrees, pitched up and stalled. Radestrom ejected, but the aircraft seemed to return to a form of stable flight before crashing.
The problem stems from the control system architecture, previous tests having shown that extreme control inputs could result in a loss of control. It is believed that if Radestrom had released the stick or used softer movements, the accident would prob- ably not have happened.
