Ansett ExpressWith Airline deregulation in Australia now entering its third year the scene in the airline industry is one of continued instability.

Compass Airlines was the first new deregulated airline in Australia. Operations commenced in December 1990 however just over twelve months later it was out of business due to massive financial problems. The public outcry was long and loud so it was no surprise that new start up airline, Southern Cross Airlines, decided to operate under the Compass name.

Compass mark 2 started flying in late August 1992 and it appeared to have learned from the mistakes of Compass mark 1 with smaller aircraft giving frequency of service and its network confined mainly to the high density east coast market. However just over six months later it too ceased operations under very dramatic circumstances, once again due to financial problems (refer full analysis elsewhere this issue). At this stage there seems little chance of a Compass mark 3 or for that matter for any new entrant coming on the scene.
