Product Test – Skynav Aviation Computer
It would appear that aviation is becoming more electronic across the board. No doubt pilots are aware of the hand held computers now available that feature alpha-numeric keyboards and which can accept software cards containing aviation programs.
Skynav Aviation Computers, a Sydney based company, offers a card that can be inserted into hardware computer models such as the Casio FX-795 and the Sharp PC-E-500. Once inserted, with manual in hand, the aviator can begin to explore the potential of the Skynav features. These hand held computers are powerful tools in their own right: they offer storage for telephone numbers and diary items; users can even improve their word power with the dictionary/thesaurus feature. There are numerous other general features besides. Now onto aviation.
Skynav enables the user to calculate everything that can be calculated on a comprehensive ‘prayer wheel’. Add to this the ability to perform charter quotes, store a domestic flight plan, the checklist for the aircraft, aerodrome information, and even how to conduct a specified aerodrome sector entry, and it can be seen that the aviator holds a sort of ‘Claytons’ Flight Management Computer in hand.
