Airbus airframe and component manufacturing is becoming increasingly automated and provides valuable experience for firms in several countries. Major partner Deutsche Aerospace successfully pushed hard to have the A321 constructed in Germany, and given the high level negotiations currently underway regarding the shortened fuselage A320 it is not inconceivable that the A320-M7 could also be built alongside the A321 at Hamburg.

Airbus Industrie Plans Strong Performance Into Next Century
Airbus Industrie has now entered its third decade of operation, having taken twenty years to realise an operating profit. It is now set to tackle the coming two decades with a mix of both current and new products to satisfy every niche of the world jetliner market.
The year 1990 was a milestone year for Airbus lndustrie (Al). Not only did it achieve a record operating profit (the first in its twenty years of manufacturing), but it also recorded a record 404 airliner sales (up from the 240 aircraft it had expected to sell). As a result its order backlog grew to over 1,000 aircraft, though with the current short-term crisis within the airline industry orders are not expected to again exceed 404 airliners, at least in the foreseeable future. Thus Al will be able to cope with the current order backlog by increasing production, so the consortium does not expect a production crisis to be experienced despite having been set back several months by the strike at British Aerospace in late 1989.
