No Fool Like No Fuel
Funny the emotions that a quick perusal of the logbook can evoke. Long forgotten faces and events seem to leap out of the simplest of entries. One in particular caught my eye.
It was brief and cryptic – “19 October, Caribou A4-179, A’drops THG, 3. 6hrs. ” It was the length of flight that struck me as odd, over three and a half hours for a simple airdrop sortie? The Caribou was slow but surely not that slow! The circumstances of that long distant morning fought their way up from that musty corner of the memory banks where they had spent their banishment. Of course . . . ! But why didn’t the entry have any mention of a landing at Rockhampton? Selective amnesia perhaps? The understandable subconscious desire to erase all recollection of a time when you pushed it just a little too far? Maybe . . .
. . . This was it! Less than nine months off conversion and arriving at the my first big Kangaroo exercise. My Captain and hero was a grizzled second tour veteran of some twenty five summers. A tad over the hill to my youthful eyes but they had to put these relics somewhere I suppose. The Crew-tech (CrewmanTechnical) was even worse! An artefact of some bygone era, his toolkit sported a faded message which purportedly read, ‘couldn’t have done it without you, rgds Wilb and Orv. ‘
