There is an old saying in the travel industry that goes something like this- “Planes fly people between airports while trains take them from city centre to city centre”.
I guess most of us can appreciate the logic of that and to a large extent its lack of relevance to airline management. However, the notion that rail can compete with air is only irrelevant so long as trains perform as we traditionally imagine them slow, inefficient and difficult to book on at the best of times. However, the dawn of a new era of very fast rail travel is upon us and its direct impact on civil aviation will be profound to say the least.
