RAN FAA Museum Developments
The Australian Naval Aviation Museum Future Development
Within the burgeoning air museum fraternity throughout Australia, the history of naval aviation is securing a niche in the preservation, conservation and display of Australia’s aviation heritage through the redevelopment of the Naval Aviation Museum at the Navy’s Air Station, Nowra, NSW.
The museum, which was formally established and opened to the public in 1974 as the Fleet Air Arm Museum, launched a campaign in September 1988 to raise$2 million for a two stage development of the museum’s facilities. The ultimate aim is to establish a medium size, modern aviation museum of international standard which displays the history of naval aviation in Australia and preserves the memory of those personnel who have served their country in naval aviation. The historians amongst us will appreciate that naval aviation in Australia dates back to World War I and included for many years, RAAF pilots and maintenance personnel.
Since the launch of the campaign chairman Rear Admiral Andrew Robertson has been joined by two Vice Chairmen, Sir JamesBalderstone and Sir Eric Neal AC. Through their assistance and advice from a supporting group of corporate leaders over$1m has been raised. This will allow the first stage, construction of the aircraft display hall, to commence in early 1990. With continued NSW Government support and encouragement from the Deputy Premier, Mr Wal Murray and the Minister for Arts, Mr Peter Collins, together with the corporate backing already received, the future development of the museum as one of NSW’s foremost aviation museums and public attractions on the South Coast is assured.
