A Lot of Lessons in Kangaroo 89 Exercise

Quite a lot of lessons have been learned following the big Kangaroo 89 Exercise held across northern Australia through July, August and September with several suspected problem areas being confirmed.

The provision of aerial refuelling tankers was shown as being absolutely essential if the new RAAF F-18 Hornet fighters are to carry out their tasks properly, including air defence of the RAN Fleet. The need for Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft was again confirmed – for the umpteenth time – but although it is a real project, acquisition is unlikely for about four years yet as Defence wants to evaluate more thoroughly current and projected developments.
