C-47 Dakota

Air Safety

One Turning, One Burning!

The following three stories show the need for decisive action when an engine is shut down, particularly if a fire is involved in two engine aircraft. The first accident is taken from the June 1954 RAAF Summary of Accidents. It shows how quickly an apparently straightforward emergency can result in a lost aircraft.

Undignified Immersion

Two pilots, undergoing conversion to Dakota aircraft, were briefed to carry out a three hour period of general flying which was to include instrument flying training. Each pilot was to act as the aircraft captain in turn for half the period and the change over was to be effected after one and a half hours had elapsed from time of takeoff. Both pilots were experienced second pilots and were both assessed as ‘above average Dakota second pilots’. Their flying experience as first pilots was 10 hours 10 minutes and 14 hours 40 minutes respectively.
