Tamworth Selected for $40 Million Pilot Training College:
Tamworth, New South Wales, has been selected as the site for a major Pilot Training College to be established in a 50:50 joint venture between Ansett and British Aerospace.
The College, which is planned to open next year, will accommodate more than 200 cadets during a 14th month, live-in course during which they will be trained from ab initio to the qualifications required to serve as a First Officer on a domestic or international jet. (Refer P. 54 May 88 AA). The College will operate a fleet of about 50 aircraft. It will have a staff of around 180 and, when fully established, will represent an investment of about $40 million. The College will also have complete academic training facilities and cadet accommodation will be of at least first-class motel standard. The BAe/Ansett Pilot Training College will be modelled on the very successful Brit- ish Aerospace College at Prestwick in Scot- land which presently trains pilots for British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Gulf Air. Airlines are responsible for recruiting cadets and training is contracted to the College. The BAe/Ansett Pilot Training College will train cadets for major airlines and is expected to attract cadets from Asia, the South Pacific, and other parts of the world. Cadet intakes will be in groups of 16, progressively bringing the College to its planned capacity of more than 200 cadets. It will make a major contribution to meeting the foreseeable increasing demand for pilots to and beyond the turn of the century. The location of the College attracted interest from 37 centres throughout Australia with the choice being finally narrowed to Bendigo, Tamworth and Wangaratta.
