Hdh MDX Agreement a Major Boost to Australia’s Aircraft Manufacturing Capability
The first new commercial helicopter design committed to production in the 1990s has been given the go-ahead – and Australia has a significant piece of the action.
When McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Company announced the decision to produce the MDX at the HAI Convention in January, it was pointed out that MDX may also be one of the first helicopters to be designed by its potential users. And the idea seems to have worked. In the month following the production announcement – over 200 orders for a production line slot have been placed. Although only $5,000 cash up front will secure a slot, the value of the orders for the revolutionary new machine is over $300m in 1989 dollars. In effect, the first year’s production has already been sold out.
