Australian Aviation Magazine Invites You to Fly Away To Farnborough ‘88 6 Sept – 2 October

Since Louis Bleriot snatched the first Channel crossing and won the £10,000 prize offered by the London Daily Mail in December 1903, mankind has been mesmerised by flight. The prize went to a Frenchman, but the impetus came from the English Lord Northcliffe. Since that time, Britain has gathered a magnificent collection of aviation memorabilia. Torii Tours has devised a British Tour which gives air enthusiasts the opportunity to see some of this unique aviation heritage and to attend the most famous Air Show of them all.

Tour Leader

Stewart Wilson has been ‘mucking about with aeroplanes’ for a long as he can remember. A pilot and a regular contributor to Australian Aviation magazine, Stewart is by profession an author specialising in aviation and motor sports. The Light Aircraft Guide is his most recently published book. Being a frequent visitor to the UK he is familiar with many of the venues on this itinerary and is a self confessed Anglophile. His knowledge of aviation and his love of the country will make this exciting itinerary a most memorable experience.

Tour Itinerary

The tour departs Sydney by Cathay Pacific at 1355 on 6th September with a refuelling stop in Hong Kong, arriving at Gatwick at 0755 on the 7th. Accommodation has been arranged in London for 5 nights, and after the first night of R&R, the tour will visit the Royal Air Force Museum at Hendon. This Museum was opened officially by Her Majesty the Queen in 1972, and houses the most comprehensive collection in Western Europe of aircraft from the earliest days of military flying.

Everyone who has heard of Farnborough associates it with the greatest Air Show on earth because Farnborough and Air Shows are synonymous. Members of the tour will attend the three days of this fantastic Air Show, returning to London and our hotel each night.

First stop Cambridge. Cambridge isn’t only a famous university town – the district boasts some of the most fascinating aircraft exhibitions anywhere in the world. The ghosts of the many unsung heroes of Bomber Command and the

I shades of Battle of Britain pilots such as Douglas Bader rub shoulders with almost one of everything at Duxford: Concorde, Britannia, Comet, Shackelton, B-17, B-29, Ambassador, TSR-2, Me-163, Vulcan and even an Aussie CA-18 Mustang. Duxford airfield is near the Duxford Imperial War Museum, the headquarters of the Duxford Aviation Society and the Norfolk Bomber Fields and Sandringham estate.

We then travel to the Minster city of York by way of the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight headquarters at Coningsby in Lincolnshire, then take an afternoon walking tour of York. ‘The Rows of York’, Tudor buildings housing fascinating shops are unique to this ancient city.

A day trip to Haworth, home of the Bronte sisters and location of their famous ‘Wuthering Heights’ and ‘Jane Eyre’ classics, as we travel through the rolling moors of southern Yorkshire. Another night in York allows time for more browsing before a visit to RAF Finningley and the famous Air Pageant of the Battle of Britain Flying Display team.

Travel by way of Hadrian’s Wall – a relic of the Roman occupation of Britain and outpost of the Roman Legion, to Edinburgh. This historic city is one of the most interesting cities in a nation filled with historic curiosities. The Royal Mile in Edinburgh, beginning with Edinburgh Castle perched on a massive crag overlooking the bustling city and finishing at the Scottish home of Her Majesty the Queen, Holyrood House, can take a day to traverse. Every doorway holds exciting stories of intrigue, rebellion, literature and art. We leave Scotland the next day via Gretna Green – scene of many runaway marriages over the traditional anvil, and enter the beautiful Lake District of Northern England.

Green pastures, craggy mountains, picturesque lakes and rambling paths combine to create nature’s landscape masterpiece. Beatrix Potter country, is breathtakingly peaceful.

South again to Warwickshire and the Cotswolds, an area filled with quaint lanes and thatched houses. En route we visit RAF Cosford which has one of UK’s finest collections of military and civil transport aircraft before travelling on to our base in Warwick. Here we have a free day to spend wandering the byways or visiting stately Warwick Castle. A major air show is scheduled for RAF Abingdon, where the best the RAF has tooffer will be present.

Travel through the peaceful, picture post card Cotswolds (cottages-in-the wild) country to the old city of Bath. So called because of the Roman Baths established there, Bath is a city of great antiquity as well as the home of Australia’s first Governor. The overnight stops in Bristol afford an opportunity to see the MV Britain, one of Britain’s first motor ships which also makes an historic maritime museum. The Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton is the next tour stop. This Museum, which was opened by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in 1964, houses one of the largest collections of military aircraft in the United Kingdom. Formed originally as a viewing area where passing motorists could stop and watch the daily flying, this Museum has expanded greatly and is of historic interest to all flight enthusiasts. Yeovilton also features a number of captured aircraft from the Falklands conflict. An overnight stop at Salisbury gives an ideal opportunity for a visit to the incredible Druid mystery of Stonehenge.

The final point of interest for aero enthusiasts is the Museum of Army Flying at Middle Wallop in Hampshire where the exhibits cover all aspects of Army flying from early ballooning to today’s modern missile carrying helicopters.

The tour departs Gatwick by Cathay Pacific on 29th September for an overnight stopover in Hong Kong. A farewell Chinese banquet will conclude a free day in this shoppers’ paradise. ETA Sydney is 0945 on 2nd October.
