Privatisation of Australian Airlines Rapidly Becoming Inevitable

The recent ‘leaking’ of the Federal Cabinet’s interest in selling Australian Airlines provided an interesting insight into what may well in time pass as the inevitable.
In the current financial environment, the Australian Government is examining every option by which it may boost its revenue. Selling off various governmental agencies, such as Telecom, Medibank, Australia Post, the Commonwealth Bank and a minority shareholding in Qantas all hold appeal to a cash-starved government facing an election year.
Most of these bodies were established deliberately as an instrument of government of the day policy. In 1987, the original purpose for establishing a bulwark against a totally private enterprise and often the monopolistic situation is all but forgotten and nowadays just as fiscally irrelevant.
