Spitfire Exported

During November Spitfire RR232 was shipped out of Australia to the UK. It is understood that the machine was sold by the UK auction house, Christies, at auction on October 31st to an, as yet, unknown buyer.

Spitfire RR232 was a static aircraft and very much a hybrid or composite machine. Owned by Peter Sledge of Sydney the fuselage was an Mk. IX obtained in South Africa fitted with Mk. XIV wings and other components from models V & VIII plus a Merlin 86A ex-Lincoln engine to make up a ‘whole’ aircraft. The machine, which has no historical connections with Australia, went on public display at the 1985 Schofields Airshow and since then has been on view at the Nowra RAN Air Museum.
