Where Are the Cheap Fares?
Readers with elephantine memories might remember our story on p17 of the March edition concerning the aged widow who tried to book an Apex fare on TAA and Ansett last September for travel in late December and could not get a seat. Following that item in Airline Affairs, we have heard of numerous examples of what appears to be a general non-availability of budget fares brought to our attention by disappointed travellers. Worse to say is that most of these people, who wanted to travel by air and were not regular air travellers had to resort to the coach and train system as an alternative.
To put the two majors to the test we ourselves attempted to book a number of typical Apex and Flexi Fare routes. Basically, Apex provides a 35% discount off the standard economy fare and is operated on most jet routes. Flexi Fare or Excursion 45 as TAA calls it, offers an excellent 45% discount off standard economy though it is not designed for multi-stage journeys and is thus fairly limited in its realistic application. Both fares come with stipulations which we won’t go into here due to lack of space and both fares were introduced to largely appease to some extent the local tourist industry which for years has decried the lack of true travellers fares within Australia.
