Update – Boeing 737-300
The advanced-technology 737-300, latest of Boeing’s new generation aircraft, is one of the quietest and most fuel-efficient jetliners in the world. It offers many of the features developed for the popular 737-200 while providing increased passenger capacity and consumed up to 30 percent less fuel per seat. This is a level of efficiency comparable to the larger 757 and 767 jetliners.
Much of the improved efficiency stems from new CFM56-3 engines. These high-bypass powerplants are produced by CFM International, a company jointly owned by General Electric of the U. S. and SNECM_A of France. Each engine is rated at 20,000 pounds of thrust. A 22,000-pound-thrust version also is available and it is this latter engine that has been selected by TAA and Ansett.
The 5:1 bypass ratio engines have large 60-inch diameter fans. To help maintain ground clearance, the engines are mounted forward of the wing and close to the leading edge. In addition, engine accessories are normally mounted at the bottom of the powerplant are moved to he sides, so that the nacelles have a unique flat-bottomed appearance. This ovular-shaped installation improves aerodynamic efficiency compared to more conventional designs.
