The wise use of high technology can multiply many times the effectiveness of combat units in the navy, army or air force. The Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) is the Australian Defence Force’s main source of scientific advice and support.

Much of the defence technology in which Australia leads the world arose either out of needs related to our special environment or out of economic pressures to make defence equipment operate safely beyond normal life expectancy.

A large continent with low-density population requires advanced surveillance systems such as over-the-horizon radars, satellite communications, modern HF communications, sophisticated combat systems, support to ship navigation and so on.
