Boeing/Bell Offer V-22 Osprey for RAAF

Very much the surprise contender in the current RAAF Utility helicopter tender, the MV-22A JVX is an aircraft about to substantially alter the style of airborne assault.

The Australian Department of Defence has announced its requirement for an Iroquois helicopter replacement programme. Responding to what will ultimately be a billion-dollar order are Aerospatiale with their Super Puma, Sikorsky with the export version of the IJH-60 Blackhawk Westland with the military development of the W30 and Boeing/Bell with the revolutionary JVX Tilt Rotor. In a series of four articles, we examine what these individual aircraft have to offer the Australian Defence Forces in the nineteen nineties and the years beyond.

The US Marine Corps is committed to over 550 aircraft with a projected IOC of 1991, the remaining US services sharing a requirement for a further 500 V-22s in versions. Not to fall behind the Soviets have announced a projected IOC before the end of this decade for a Tiltrotor assault ship expected to supplant the trusty Mil-8 Hip.
